mounting advice for fire extinguisher?

Just bought a fire extinguisher for the car... trying to decide on where to mount it.
I dont want to put it on the passenger side pillar... plus its prolly too large to fit there... i was thinking of putting it on the panel separating the cabin from the trunk... anyone have any other suggestions/pics on where they mounted theres? also it didnt come with mounting brackets so im trying to figure out some sorta quick disconnect system... any input is appreciated

Just put it behind either the driver's or the passenger seat and call it a day.

Believe it or not, but velcro works on the wall behind the bins. I have a very small extinguisher, though. Has not fallen off in 18 months.

or you can mount it on the rear strut tower bar...woops but then again it might get too hot in the summer...just put it behind the driver or passenger seat and call it the day.

If you ever need to pass a tech inspection (autocross, track days...) then velcro, cubbies, or behind the seat ain't gonna cut it. I have a mount fabricated from square aluminum tubing that bolts to the two front passenger seat bolts. Extinguisher ends up sitting just off and under the front edge of the passenger seat. I have a pull pin for quick release.

I can take pics but it is not installed at the moment.

NICE! Def post pics plz. This is the place I've advocated placing it for YEARS. Literally. Mounting it on any plastic surface isn't smart...someone posted here about it braking off the rear plastic between the bins.

Putting it in the bins isn't exactly accessible, and every second counts.

If your extinguisher fits on the A-pillar, it's not real, and it's just for show. You need at least a 2.5 lb bottle to put out a real fire that you might encounter in the FD. I haven't mounted mine yet, but if I were to, it would go in front of the passenger seat like Zullo's, fastened by metal brackets. No dangerous missle in my car in case of an accident! I'm just not sure if I can fit a 5lb bottle there...

I'll prob get a roll bar/cage first, and that's really the best place to mount it...w/ metal brackets, to one of the cross bars. Safe, accessible.

Ramy, why don't you just buy a fire system...mount the bottle in the trunk, mount the switch on the dash and mount the nozzles on in the engine bay and drivers compartment? If I had the extra cash thats the route I would go.

Dan, it sounds a bit extreme...that's all. I dunno if it's necessary to go all out like THAT. A nice 5lb halon bottle sounds like more than enough. A fire that it can't handle prob isn't one I'd walk away from anyways...

Fire Extinguisher

I also have mine mounted on the passenger seat rails.

Simply took a piece of flat aluminium bar, bent it down and flat again at each end to raise the centre, and drilled it to suit the seat rails. 4 Tek Screws to hold the fire extinguisher bracket onto the bar, and done.

It has been used as an example to other drivers at the track

I knew when I posted that, there would be requests for pics... which is good, cuz I need to get it back in the car soon - before the first track event of the season... woo-hoo!!!

I'll try to post pics of at least the mounting hardware, if not installed, tonight.

HALON. Works on fuel, electrics, you name it, works VERY fast (actually displaces O2), and won't mess up your interior or engine bay when it sprays on it. That's def. the way to go IMO. Don't wanna get in a long discussion over it though...there are quite a few halon and extinguishers in general threads already

If you were rice it would go on the passenger side A-pillar I vote to go somewhere behind the passenger . Easy, quick acess and no rice.

If you're trying to decide where to mount your extinguisher, sit in the drivers seat, strap yourself in good, now reach around with your hands, it should be somewhere you can reach without moving your body too much. Infront of the passenger seat is a great spot, just be sure you can pull it out easily. Nothing worse than being trapped in the car when it's on fire and can't get at your extinguisher. In my old car I had one mounted upsidedown vertical behind the center console.

extinguisher mount pics

So it's not the prettiest thing but it is functional. Probably a bit over-engineered, but this mount is shared between 3 cars (Rx7, S2000, and 300ZX) so it's strength is in its
flexibility; the design could certainly be simplified for one car only.

The first pic shows the bracket. The two bolts bolt into the front seat rail bolt holes, passenger side. The two elegant steel pipe spacers hold the bracket up off the floor
a couple inches. The longer piece across the middle is slotted for insertion of the
extinguisher's bracket piece - and a quick release pin holds it all together.

This shows the extinguisher attached to the mount. When installed in the car, the mount is angled forward and the extinguisher pulls straight back and up at 45 degrees.

Here you can see the extinguisher attached to the mount with the quick release pin in place.

Once the pin is pulled you can see how the extinguisher and bracket slide right out of the mount.

Sorry no pics of it in the car yet but didn't have time this evening.
