motor mounts? replacing?
hey guys, I am looking at someone's 93 FD, an din the list of what has been replaced, he listed the motor mounts (this is after a mazda reman was installed.) I have a freind that says this usually indicates that the car was driven into the ground, but I was chatting an older couple I've known for a while and they said that they used to have a minivan where the motormounts got replaced several times. What's youjr guys experience/knowledge about this? Do I not need to worry, or does that indicate hard driving, racing, etc in the past?

Was the actual metal mount replaced or just the rubber bushings or whatever there called. I mean if was just the rubber pieces I would replace them to if i had the motor out of the car but if they broke and were replaced somethings not right. Plus how many miles are on the car and why was the motor replaced to begin with.

I've replaced mine with Mazdaspeed ones when I did the rebuild at 90k, the passenger side was completely dead anyway they both looked pretty bad. It is common for the passenger side to go out first due to the twisting by the rotation of the engine and also the heat from the exhaust. Shouldn't be a problem with the car since FD engine mounts tend to go out after awhile.

One of my mounts is bad
I bought my FD with 125K miles on it. It was driven VERY conservatively. Upon inspection, one of the motor mounts was determined to need replacement. I believe it's the rubber that's bad. I'm not sure what the symptoms of this are.

yeah the older model's engine mounts are one piece but the newer 95+ ones are 2 piece where you can replace just the rubber part with something like this.

will the dealer sell me just the rubber piece inside? I called them up and asked for a price on a "motor mount" and they told me $250. I only need the rubber piece and I cant see sawing off my leg to get a little rubber piece. Anyone know where I can get it?

I just replaced my friends 93 engine mounts and its two pieces. As you can see from the pic above the rubber piece has two studs on them, one of the studs is bolted to the other piece of the engine mount, the metal piece which is bolted to the engine with three 17mm bolts and the other stud is bolted to the subframe. There also a heat shield on the rubber mount to protect it from the heat. Engine mounts also break because oil gets on the rubber and breaks down the rubber. Engine mounts are a common thing to replace. But if you dont drive the Rx-7 the way its suppose to be driven you might not notice a broken engine mount. If you can grasp the engine and physically rock it side to side then its broken. If you power brake the engie and the motor rocks alot then its broken.
