Apex N1 Exhaust (I searched) Opinions

I am considering purchasing a used N1 single exhaust from someone for $300. Before I make the guy actually bring out his exhaust, I'd like to get a good idea of whether or not its something I'd seriously consider buying. The reason why I'm suddenly rethinking it is because I ran a search to find out more about this exhaust and it seems like a lot of people are saying it sounds really bad. The current exhaust I have is an HKS unit. I'm not certain what model it is either. I did some research and it visually matched the HKS "turbo" exhaust system. however, i've had several people including some shop people tell me its a "super dragger" system. below are some pictures of my car. you can only see the tip really but its the best i have right now.

if you match it to the small picture on the rx7store, it looks about right. the tip even bends up a bit. if you check my dyno thread (https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=54324) people attributed my low power figures to my restrictive exhaust. Thus, I began seeking a better exhaust system in hopes of bringing up the power figures which is why I'm considering this guy's used Apex N1. The question now is...

1. what exhaust do I have? turbo or super dragger?
2. is what i have restrictive and lowering my power?
3. would I get significant gains from the Apex N1?
4. would you recommend the Apex N1?
5. is $300 a good price for a used unit?

quite a few questions, huh? heh, but they all make a difference as to whether I should get a new exhaust or not. If the exhaust isn't the problem then I obviously don't need to swap it and I'll need to figure out what else could be an issue (i have since then changed the plugs thoe). what i do know now is that i actually quite like whatever exhaust i have on my car right now. its not very loud and it sounds decent. i'm sure i don't need to attract more attention being flaming yellow as it is. i can compromise on noise only if it will yield me the power gains. i don't just want noise for the sake of noise.

thanks in advance!

are you talking a cat back or just the muf?

Assume it's a cat back. N1 is a very good system. A lot people use it. Kind of depends on the condition of the used part. I would say the N1 at least will be the same performance as the current system you have. Probably better than the one you have.

honestly neokai, do not get an N1. i have heard your car, and it sounds awsome. better than any FD with an Apex exhaust ever will, IMO. it also looks better than a fartcan sticking out the back of the car. i highly doubt you will feel much of a performance difference. im guessing a new N1 will give you an added 2-3 hp up top in the rev range at most, but thats about it.

if you just want a new exhaust and want the same look, go with a Racing Beat Single Tip. it looks almost identical to the HKS you have now.

The apex'i N1 single or dual will be very loud without a catalytic converter (i.e. with a midpipe resonated or not). But I like the sound, the problem is that the police don't like the noise.

LoL! JoeD, why can't I remember meeting you. I must've met you somewhere if you've heard my car, right?

Today I ran into a few RX-7 guys at Dynospot Racing down in Mountain View: Eric/Tobal, RotaryExtreme (don't remember your name, sorry), George, and Chuck I believe. Great guys. Turns out Chuck has the same exhaust I have and he said its supposedly a really old HKS system that Petit used to sell or something. It is a very nice sounding system, very quiet, and probably isn't as bad as the super dragger which i'm now sure is a different unit. Since its so quiet, its probably somewhat restrictive but like JoeD says, I don't want to spend $300 for a wee bit more power that isn't noticeable. Eventually when I work up to tracking this car (instead of autocross), I'll go to a full race spec exhaust anyway. A little restriction doesn't matter too much to me as a big hp number isn't exactly my goal. I just wanted to knoe if it's a factor in solving the fluttering problem on the top end.

i showed up at the Coliseum on the 17th just in time to see your last run...but then you left right after that. even though you really didnt get on it, your car still sounded very nice when accelerating durring the first straight away.

Hey whats up!
You have an old PFS exhaust system.
I drove that car and it sounded good.
Don't put a N1 on it, something like a Trust or HKS system.
Much better
