Unhappy Motor Lock!!!!!

Ok I need to know if my motor is junk now. I was going to a party and got on it, but not that hard, i turned a corner and let off the clutch, my car wanted to die so i gave it some gas and it was running agian, then i started to feel vibration in my clutch pedal, so i pushed it in so see if it would go away and my car died, i pulled over on the side of the road to start it agian. I sat there trying to start it, and it would just crank over and nothing would happen, the longer I sat there the more it wanted to start, so I let it sit there for about a half an hour to an hour. I came back and I tried to start it agian, it cranked for about 5-10 secs. then just stopped, it wont crank anymore, when I try to start it, all my power goes really low and nothing happens, my car has 113,000 miles on it, i dont know if its the original motor or not, but when I start the car when its cold it smokes, but when it warms up it donest smoke anymore. If anyone could give me some idea of what could be wrong, it would be great. Thanks.

Hmm.. Sounds like you might have a blown seal. Have you had the time to run a compression test on her? Also, how long has she been blowing smoke cold?

I am willing to bet if its original (I know you’re not sure) and she has 113,300 miles on her you may have a compression issue. Search the forum here for "compression" and see what you come up with.

Ok, I got the motor to turn now, i replaced the plugs and it just turns over, and it wont fire, i took out one of the plugs to hear the compression, and it sounds like it is missing a stroke, but then it will sound normal, i have no idea anymore, if anyone has an idea that would be great, Thanks

I'm wondering if maybe you have a sticking apex seal, or broken spring. If it stuck all the way in, you'd lose compression on two sides of that rotor. If it stuck anywhere else, it would tend to lock the motor up.

I believe most engines will run on one and a third rotors, but they won't idle. An apex seal problem with one rotor shouldn't keep the other from firing, unless maybe the cranking speed is just way down.

Start with a compression test, and report the findings. If you do have low compression on two faces of a rotor, that's the place to start. Has this motor sat without running for any real length of time recently? Sometimes stuck seals can be freed, but I'd defer that procedure to someone else, since I have no personal experience with it.

Good luck,

With both plugs out and listening for compression how many pops (or chugs) do you hear? there should be a total of 6 (3 apex seals x 2 rotors) Have someone rotate the front pulley while you listen (19mm socket I believe). If you are not getting a full 6 chugs, RonK is right - Its rebuild time.

i pulled the plugs out and turned the motor over and there isnt 3 chugs there is only 2, but every once in a while there will be 3 chugs.

Just to be completely clear about this, you should hear two chugs for every complete turn of the eccentric shaft. That will be one side of each rotor. Turn the shaft a 2nd time and listen for the chugs from the second side of each rotor. Finally a third turn will catch the 3rd side of each rotor.

In other words, turn the pulley 3 times, and listen for 2 chugs for each turn, 6 total for all three turns. If the pattern is 2-1-1-2-1-1-2-1-1... then you have a bad apex seal on one rotor. By listening closely, or holding your finger over the spark plug holes, you can tell which rotor has the problem, though the result is the same.

Good luck.

Well it seems that you do have a seal problem. The easiest way to rectify this situation is a rebuild. Someone posted earlier that it might be possible to free an apex seal if it is indeed sticking, however I have never done this or know of anyone doing it.

Sorry for the bad news buddy..
