motor install. help please!

i know the fc like the back of my hand but by friend purchased an fd and promptly blew the motor. him and his buddy put a new mazda manufactured motor in the car and they couldnt get it to fire so they asked for my help, so im asking for yours. i think they have installed everything correctly but i can be positive since i didnt watch or do any of the work. it has a power fc in it but that worked fine with the old motor. i went through it and checked and made sure all the vacuume lines were plugged. it gets spark and fuel. i got it to start and run a few times but it just chugs along at maybe 500 rpm with the pedal floored. after it warms up it wil hold idle but its really choppy and is bellowing white smoke out the tail pipe. its not coolant, like its really lean maybe? also i have noticed that if the car will run the gauges wont read (no tach or anything)but they flicker to life and the car dies. one last thing that concerns me is that with the key on and the gauges all lit up there is a buzzing under the throttle body. im thinking it could be a coil pack? sounds like a horn going off on a weak battery. it sounds like a short circuit and bad timing but i dont know electrical or how to check timing. any ideas? thanks guys.

sounds like a ground issue to me, check the battery positive and negative terminals and all ground wires and their mounting points.

you have to remember these engines will smoke like a **** for about 5-10 minutes after initial startup.

Are the plug wires hooked up properly in the correct order? Have you verified that you're getting spark properly?

Check the 2 plugs on the crank angle sensors, there is a white one and a gray one. The white should be on top. If that checks out then check the hose to the Map sensor.
