Question modifying stock temp gauge?

i remember someone telling me that it is possible to modify the stock temp gauge so that it gives you an actual reading of temprature (mazduh!!). if anyone knows the process speak now or forever hold your peace! the reason i would like to know is because im in the process of having new gauge faces manufactured -> https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=238183

and i would like to add tick marks and a temprature scale to the gauge as recomended by *teamstealth*

thanks, heath

I wanted to do something very similar, but could never come up with a DIY approach for adding the marks. Best idea at the time seemed to be pinstripe tape, but I didn't think it would last because of the heat, etc.

I don't have a write-up, but if you want to duplicate the calibrated approach I can send copies of an Excel spreadsheet that I used, notes on parts lists, and a few pictures. Send me a PM.

im actually having a new set of gauge faces produced... see thread in my original post (99+ spec replicas to be exact) so this would be the perfect time to do it!

Not directly related to topic but if you install an after-market temp. gauge, would you have to deactivate the cureent stock one to do so?

If you replace it in the original cluster you loose the warning light. MaxCooper did a write up and he put the warning lights in a different location I beleive.

If I were to replace the orginals, i'd replace the water temp with a linear one and the oil pressure with oil temp instead.

go racer: im not talking about any sort of gauge replacement. im making new gauge *faces* for the FD. im pretty sure the warning light will not be affected by the linear temp mod (i looked at it and everything seems dooable).

duboisr: thanks i may gove him a call if i cant figure out hte existing writeups

^ ok, the only problem with changing the faces is loosing calibration. Out of six places I called in both Orange and LA counties, only one would install my white face gauges.

zuh??? explain...i dont understand....are you talking about all the gauges or just the temo one? -H

actually to be frank, i have only played around with the tach so far... if i remember it stops automatically at 9K?? im not sure if the others are the same... if not we may have a problem with the whole set

ok, i may have a solution to the calibration problem. i just opened my set up again... all of the gauges have a stopping point if you rotate them clockwise correct? my question is are these points the same for EVERY FD gauge set? if so, then all i would have to do is have the manufacturers put a reference dot (on the non visibal section of the gauge face) at the stopping point. then no calibration should be necissary correct? just pull off the needles, pull off old faces, put on new faces, replace the needle pointing to reference dot when it wont turn clockwise any further. if all FD gagues are NOT similar, each individual could make reference dots for each gauge himself @ the stopping points.

can anyone knoledgable tell me wether all FD gagues are identical in that respect?

You'll need to determine the manufacturing tolerances for the gauges AND their senders. I've linearized two FD's (one each 94 & 95) and the factory water temperature senders (for the gauges) were in spec and similar but both different enough to require unique settings.

Not sure what you mean. To get a real temp gauge you have to solder a jumper on the circuit board and add some resistors. Changing the face won't change the fact that the gauge doesn't move.

yes, the gauge face would be in combination with a linerization mod. basically id like to make faces that have the degrees marked on them... im just worried that if i make up these gauges, that it would be a PITA for someone to have to calibrate their gauge to the perset temp marks on the face (or if the FD gauges are all the same as the next one) thanks
