Modified Magazine Cover Story: FD Testing Event Virginia International Raceway

We are pleased and excited to announce Modified Magazine will be doing an exclusive cover story on the FD Testing Event to be held at the Virginia International Raceway South Course on May 20th and we are inviting you all to attend. All the results will be published in Modified and videos will be available concurrently on various feeds.

We appreciate the ideas about additional cars we could add to the test, and Modified agrees that adding a “stock” FD as the baseline makes a lot of sense. They’ve also requested the event testing be limited to rotary powered cars only (sorry LSX guys, please show up though as we’d love to have you there). So, we are going to add just the stock FD to the existing group for this test and are looking for a really stock FD to participate as a baseline test car. If you have one and want to commit to the event, PM me or any of the group with the details on your car.

We will be there Saturday afternoon, but the event really begins on Sunday afternoon the 19th with a PCA event at VIR and our testing officially gets underway Monday the 20th. Modified Magazine Editor Peter Tarach and several other Modified participants will be there to drive and evaluate the 6 test cars. They have also agreed to take pictures and do sidebar stories on other fellow rotary car owner attendees, so shine up your car and we can show them some nice East Coast FD’s!

Background on the Event: Read Here - https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-20th-1030737/

We are still working to finalize all the details, but here are the initial plans:

May 19th Sunday Afternoon
The PCA event scheduled at VIR for the weekend will be wrapping up and this will give us the opportunity to have Fritz, Peter, and Logan begin taking the 6 test cars out for initial drives on the track. The purpose of this is to give them some seat time so they get comfortable with the unique characteristics of each car. Only those that are registered for the PCA event are allowed to go out on the track on Sunday so driving will be limited to Fritz, Peter, and Logan. The rest of us will hang out and cheer them on.

May 19th Monday
The Testing Event officially gets underway on Monday. We have two options for the day, with 1) reserving the track (South Course: VIR Track Map) for ˝ day, which allows for testing sessions on the 6 cars and maybe some limited driving for those that are “qualified” to drive on VIR, or 2) reserve the track for the entire day and open up driving to a larger number of qualified drivers and allow passenger seat time in the cars as well.

With option 1, we get the track from noon to approximately 5 pm or so. In the am and before test-driving begins, we will dyno the 6 cars to establish baselines for each. We will then start testing sessions at noon and run until all testers have had an opportunity to drive and compare each car. Fritz, Peter, and Logan are qualified drivers and instructors so they will drive each car as well as Peter Tarach from Modified (with one of the qualified drivers as an instructor) and Gordon and I will either drive with an instructor or be a passenger in each car. We make no claims to be great drivers so safety comes first here. We have 9 guys that will need to drive in each of the 6 cars so this means up to 9 sessions out on the track. Given each session will take about 20 minutes, we are looking at around 3 hours of track time for the testing. As Gordon and I won’t most likely drive each car but will be passengers in some, the time will be a little less than this but we won’t have a bunch of time for other guys to get out on the track.

Our plan in this case is to set up track opportunities for others between the testing sessions, allowing a select group of drivers to get out on the track when the 6 test cars are cooling down between sessions.

We’re also thinking about throwing in one spectator high-speed “track touring experience” session where anyone can take his or her car out on the track in a controlled environment led by an instructor.

With option 2, we’d book the course for the full day and have much more track time available for others. The testing schedule needs 3 hours of track time, so we’d end up with about 5 hours of additional time for others to use the track, allowing for plenty of track time for everyone.

Now the caveat for option 2: The track will only be open to drivers that are “qualified”. Again, safety first here and we want the day to go well with everyone going home in one piece. So, what is qualified? Fritz says we need to have advanced drivers who have experience on VIR so that we don’t have to worry about any unnecessary agricultural research, aka going off track. ☺ So, White Group (upper intermediate and early advanced drivers), Black Group (advanced drivers) and Red Group (instructors) with track time at VIR only. That means no Green or Blue Group drivers will be allowed even with time at VIR. If you are a Green or Blue Group guy like me, you can still ride as a passenger, just can’t take your car out on the track, with the possible exception of the “track touring experience” session.

Finally, we will also try, in either scenario, to accommodate those that want to ride as passengers in the test cars. If you want to do this, you’ll need to wear a Snell SA rated helmet, so bring yours along or borrow one. I’m happy to lend mine out. Also wear a long sleeve cotton t-shirt and no open toe shoes please.

Costs
There is no cost to attend the event so come on down. We are asking if you are able, to make a small suggested donation of $25 to help defray the expense of renting the track. This is completely up to you so don’t let it stop you from showing up. We will post up a Paypal account soon for this.

Should we rent the track for the ˝ day session and you’d like to participate as a qualified driver for track sessions, we are asking you pay $100 to help defray the track costs. If we go to the full-day sessions, the cost will be $200 for qualified drivers. Fritz Flynn will conduct the morning drivers’ session for all of those that will drive on the track.

In addition, if there are enough interested in the “track experience” session, we ask that you pay $35. If you want to be a passenger in one of the 6 testing cars, make a donation for this as well.

All in all, it should be a good, inexpensive time. We would add to all that our main goal is to test the 6 cars and do a great job of gathering as much data as we can and getting as many qualified impressions recorded and written down and videoed as we possibly can and get that organized and analyzed and made available to everyone. So, we can’t let the event overwhelm the testing. If we take the current half day, we can probably get 5 or more qualified drivers on the track and let a number of people ride as passengers in the test cars. We can probably increase the number of people driving their cars on the track to 16+ or so, if we take the whole day. In either case, though, we are not expecting more than 35 people to join us, since we’re not staffed for a big event.

As time is short on making some decisions, let us know by this Friday April 12th what you’d like and we will try to set it up. To expedite the process, add yourself to the lists in the next post and we will go from there.

Fritz, Peter, David, Logan and Gordon... ☺

I have not been to VIR ever but have many years of track experience on a variety of different tracks. Could some form of exception be made?

I understand and sorry you feel that way. LSX powered cars are welcome to attend and if you are a qualified driver, then to drive also. Please understand this started out as a way to compare various rotary powered engines. I like all sorts of upgrades and swaps and so do the other guys involved.

I'm not flying all the way their to just to watch. I'll even help if need be. Hell last year I went to Vegas during the Sema show and did the Exotic Car Racing. I drove a Ferrari 430 and an Audi v10 A8 around their track. That was an awesome experience for me however, nothing can compare to riding shotgun in a fellow rotor heads 3 or 4 rotor fd.

I am also a bit bummed that modified magazine doesn't feel a V8 Rx7 is needed. I know all of us participating wanted one to be there. Never know, they might make an exception hopefully.

At any rate this is going to be a very unique and fun event!

Now David, I unfortunately cannot let all the guys drive the 4-rotor. Due to the nature of the dogbox trans and some other factors. Hope that isn't taken personally!

Not technically, but nothing would stop a v8 powered car from running while in between the cool down sessions and comparing times? The information gathered in this event could end a LOT of never ending debates.

Do you honestly think online debates about cars will even be affected by anything done on the day? And besides they are welcome to come. They just aren't part of the comparison/test group which I do not see what the big deal is.
