Midpipe with Borla vs. N Tech High Flow Cat

My friends shop tested the back pressure of my exhaust while looking for a boost problem I had with my car. (back pressure turned out not to be the cause of the problem) They found 7 lb of back pressure with the new N Tech high flow (ha ha) cat in the exhaust system. To high. Not good. So, off comes the N Tech and on goes a stainless midpipe with a Borla straight through muffler I had them put in it. At Jimlabs suggestion as I recall. Repeat the test, 3 lb back pressure! Much better! And the sound is now actually a bit quieter but deeper than with the N Tech. And yes, my slightly used N Tech cat is now for sale, cheap.

are there any vendors that sell a midpipe with the borla xr1 already welded in there rather than just a resonator? most of the muffler shops here in california don't want anything to do with anything that resembles a midpipe and i don't really have the facilities to try to weld one together myself

VRSexhaust.com makes one with a Magnaflow muffler equivalent.

You can always try to do it your self, jsut rent an exhasut pipe cutter, and expander from autozone, and buy two 3" exahust clamps. It won't look as pretty as being welded, but how often do u look under there anyway.

...bill,

Were you running your air pump with the N-tech cat? What was your problem?

I have an n-tech but my airpump is broken and causing my idle to be bad.

They seem like a good place, the guy actually returns emails too! What a concept! I have their SS downpipe and it fits great, excellent quality metal and welds.

Thanks a lot for the info guys, I'll most likely order one from them and I'll post a review when I get it installed. Haha, the fact that they return emails is definately a plus these days!

Lightbulb Nice thread, gives me an idea

Matt, did the DP have a O2 sensor bunge welded on it?

Back pressure tests on all the high flow Cat's would tell us which is highest free flowing one.
