Mazda Remans on Backorder

I just got off the phone with Ray at Malloy and he is having real trouble getting the waranteed Mazda 13B remans back in stock. He said they have 9 on backorder and the problem might have to do with the RX-8 recalls. Apparantely it's the same shop doing the rebuilding. This sucks for anyone waiting for a reman (me). I've been waiting over 3 weeks.

I'm on the list too. When I originally talked to him, they were supposed to be in this week...

Probably going to be waiting even longer with the RX-8 recall as I would imagine they would take priority.

Just get the motor rebuilt. A good shop may make you wait longer but at least you know what was replaced.

My car has been in the dealership for a little over 3 weeks now and I really had my doubts when I was told that there were no rebuilt FD motors here in the USA and that a new one would have to come from Japan. I guess all the FD motor replacements are going back to NEW and not REMAN as was the case just a few weeks back if this is really the case.

prob because all the parts are so shot there's nothing left worth re-using except a few rotors

He, he, he . I wish that were the case. I asked them to check compression and they said told me that the numbers were good but the water seals have had their best days. If I knew of a real good shop where I live, I would've opted for a "rebuild" but nobody works on these motors here in Roch. and that dealers dont do rebuilds. Anyways, it's getting a new Koyo N flow radiator & hoses, clutch, replaced twins, belts, DP, IC, & PFC; that should keep it going for a few more years

Ray had remans in July, because I bought one. Had new housings, rotors, bearings in addition to the other thigns. With current cost of parts, it is more expensive to rebuild than buy a reman (unless you are reusing housings).

it's a toss up

you can usually get a rebuild with at least one new housing, street port, and alot of other new parts for $2400...typically one of the housings is still good

since I'm a big fan porting, I wouldn't consider a reman again

90% of the motors I've seen torn down needed two new rotor housings, unless they had very low mileage. At that point getting a reman becomes a no brainer. Then tear it down to port and rebuild it, in the process clearancing the side seals much better than they did from the factory.

if you do your own porting and reassembly that's fine, but most people don't....that's prob another $600-$700 (what Chris charged me on my reman tear down and port work)

anyway, I'm sold on the 3 mm seals

Where are you shopping? That price is insanely good. I've not been quoted less than 2600... reman. For a rebuilt one I've been quoted 3500, 4950, 6000. Heck the rebuilt cost even runs higher than that. 1,435.00 for an Atkin's rebuild kit, 630 for 1 housing is 2035 and that's doing it yourself... no porting of anykind.

2400 for a rebuilt ready to go engine? Sign me up.

I just got a call from Ray and the engines shipped to him this morning. He thinks they will arrive on Wednesday.

I went with a reman because after taking apart my engine I found that I needed 2 new rotor housings, an intermediate housing, and possibly a rear side housing. After checking the prices on mazdaspeed, I found that it would cost significantly less just to go with a reman.

Sweet. Thanks for posting Charlie.

The reason I wanted the Mazda reman and not someone else's rebuild is because of the 12 month or 12,000 mile warrantee. I defintetly considered calling giving it to Rotary Ressurection but honestly - I didn't feel like pulling the engine and I would rather have the 'newer' parts.
I took it to Jim at JPR and he's going to be doing the remove and replace (and a couple other things). www.jprimports.com

Jim's a real nice guy, he'll do good work for ya.

I also spoke to Mr. Crowe today and he told me the good news about the remans.

It always amazes me to see cheap engine rebuilds- there must be shortcutting something. Mazda owns and make the parts there is no way I can compete with their pricing unless I cut out some quality or service. This is not why we always have about 14-15 FDs on site & waiting to have engines built, turbosystems installed,etc.... Quality isn't cheap or quickly accomplished.
