Mazda improved left inner door handle trim P/N FD01-68-DDYE-00

One of the RX7s I bought last year had the driver side inner door handle trim where the insert was broken off and missing. You know the part where your fingers go when you close the door. I bought a new one months ago and put it in today. Turns out the replacement part from Mazda FD01-68-DDYE-00 no longer has that separate part that can break off. Here are some pics so you can see what I'm trying to explain. So if you want to fix yours or pro-actively get a new part while Mazda still makes it, just Google the part# and buy from your favorite place. I think someone makes metal ones too, but I prefer the stock look and am happy the replacement parts no longer have that design defect. Old one shown in the top of the first photo where you can see the missing piece that fell off my car long ago. Last photo shows the new one installed in my 15k mile car (and sadly trim is all beat up even on a 15k mile car!).

Nice! I’ll have to look to see if they updated the RHD version too (surely so). Any idea why that bit can pop out? (Mine’s missing)

The missing piece was a ground.

Only the '93s and early 94's had that ground pad. It's supposed to ground you as you get out of the car so you don't touch the car and shock yourself. For some reason the Japanese are SUPER big about this, I've seen a number of aftermarket products designed to reduce the chance of a shock.

Unfortunately Mazda didn't make it well at all, every car with those pads has it broken. They just did a crap job designing that part. Good idea, poor execution.

You can only get the non-ground pad door pull cups now. The aftermarket aluminum cups are EXCELLENT - first time I tried one I was really impressed. Makes the door feel super solid when you grab the handle. It can be a little trickier to remove and re-install the cup since it's dead solid with no give but it's doable.

The ground pad broke off on my car some time ago. I glued it back on with epoxy but in a year or so it came off again. I used epoxy a second time and that lasted another year before failing. Then I used superglue and it has held up for 6 years so far, but I'm careful not to press hard on the pad when closing the door.

I bought one of the latter door cups from Ray Crowe a couple years ago...after I got tired of trying to reinforce the original 93 version. Maybe I don’t know what I’m missing with the aftermarket metal versions but the new OEM one was WAY sturdier than my original. And as DC described, a nice solid feel. Wished I’d bought one years earlier.

My '94 came with the "non-ground" door pull cups. They are way better than broken ground-type pull cups. The metal ones are another order of magnitude better still. Everyone I've had grab and try the pull cups were amazed.

I think I saw some of those a while back. Problem is, I couldn't find any options for them in RHD.
Happen to have any leads?
