I was a hard core Auto man before - search and see....Now I am a converted MAnual transmission man. MAtter of fact, I am doing my second car, the MBM project , right now. So my answer is not a ya/na but a Hell Yea !

Do it all yourself and spend $1500 tops on the swap. Use the existing auto harness and keep the existing auto gauge cluster with your current milage intact.

I say Nay.

Put in a better ratio diff. (I didn't do this, because I thought the Auto was more than enough for me).

While I still had the automatic in the car I installed 4.33 gears in the rear and ran it for another year...until I burnt up the 1/rev clutch pack. Welded her right together...

That's an interesting point.

If you went from auto to manual and kept the stock rear-end, wouldn't that make your gears alot...longer?

Good thing? Bad thing?

Is the radiator in an auto FD same as manual too? I heard it's not from guys who've done auto--->manual swaps.

thanks for the input guys, ill probally do the swap myself... but, where can you find the parts?? i mean im not gonna buy a tranny on ebay... and i dont want to spend like 3000... 1500 is a good price to swap... if anyone knows where i can get the parts good parts for cheap....

and i also herd that the radiator is different... but ive already replaced it... so thats not a problem...

well question for you. why didnt you buy an fd with a manual in the first place? its been my experience that autos are for girlie dudes that dont drive the car the way it was supposed to be driven.

In the Auto I noticed a BIG difference after bringing it back out on the street. the speedo was off a little but this did not bother me. I just liked the added quickness. So I go used to it when I did the 5speed swap. Now with everything done and the T04s on 15# the car is just darn quick. In the summertime I can break the 265's loose in third gear ! I don't care about top end, just getting from A to B the quickest

i say do the swap. Also most people will purchase an automatic due to other reasons. I bought mine because of the great price, had the ext/int combo i wanted, new engine, yada yada. I drove the auto for over 2 years and had a blast....then it was time to do sumthin diff. Swappin in the 5spd was the BEST thing that could ever happen to my car. IM happy with it now but thats not to say i was never happy before.

also the auto radiator is different then the 5spd. The auto has a built in tranny cooler in the bottom of the radiator. If u wanted to use the radiator in a 5spd u just cap off the nipples on the bottom of the radiator that normally run to the trans. Mine is currently like this and i have absolutley no probs. Of course it is winter and i know i would have issues in the summer if i didnt have my fan mods done. With them i have no prob.

I guess the only differences is you lose some surface area because your not utilizing a whole section of the radiator.

Some people ^^^^ should have a prefrontal lobotomy (at the same time doing the world a great favor) performed at birth!!

This statement makes a great deal of sense... and is the primary reason most people purchase an auto (including myself). I will add that at the time I was looking at purchasing my FD, most manuals I checked out were pretty well trashed and generally in overall poor condition.

It depends on what your overall objective is for your FD (I will eventually do a swap myself). Good luck!
