i have a blow r1 . i want to ask all you experts on whats the difference in a malloy and a reman engine. i know that the malloy is alot cheaper but thats what im worried about cheaper usually means poorer quality.

They are the same thing.. But you can get a discount going through mallroy. actually i believe you have to go through KD rotary...

No, you can get one from them for ~$2300 Or the can do a street ported with extras for more..

BTW I would only do a street port if i had a Power FC or haltech....

Maloy is a Mazda dealer and get their engines from the same place all other dealers do. The difference is that they offer a discount to MSCW club members and local shops like KD. Personally if I was having a new engine put in I would have it built up with better apex and water seals and probably some coolant porting.

I got a Malloy reman through Dave at KDR. It was $1750 but it jumped the week before I bought it to $1950. Malloy has a good reputation for not using used parts in their remans but all new parts (rotor housings, rotors, etc.) Dave said in that all the engines he's ever torn down to streetport he's only seen one with 1 used part. Getting it street-ported is a decision you have to make with want you want out of your RX7. If you plan on modding it heavily you should go with a street-port and in KDs price he includes oil and coolant porting, all new silicone seals and o-rings, and if you want to turn the boost up past 13 then go with 2mm Hurley racing seals. The whole job came out to $5500 with the Hurley seals but I know I have a strong running engine that runs cooler. It's all in want you want with the car.

Correction;

Malloy does not build remans! They get them from the Mazda North America facility that assembles them.

I think I remember that AC Delco just bought the Mazda North America Reman facility? Could it be? Is nothing sacred?

(I find it hard to believe that they use all new parts in their remans. I would think that they clean and mic the parts, and if they pass, throw em' on the shelves as "good" parts. My definition of good used parts is probably different and more demanding than theirs. I would take a known engine that was running at disassembly and have a good local rebuilder like KD do it. They are going to care a lot more how it comes out then some guy on an assembly line working for $15.00 /hr....)

I have some input regarding this topic which I think would be of interest. I purchased a Mazda reman through Malloy less than a month ago and I decided to tear it down for the street porting and upgraded seals, and boy what a surprise!! I've never seen such "JUNK" in all the years that I've been around rotaries. They said that the pieces that were reused were "in spec", but I never thought that they had been "made" to spec. The rotors for instance were very worn and had been hammered were they apex seal grooves were and then filed down. The rotor bearings were completely "SHOT". They must have had over 100K miles on them. I also found a corner seal that was cracked right down the middle. The side housings were severely scratched as well. There was also a considerable rust/deposit build up inside the water passages. The "only" pieces that had been replaced were the rotor housings. I was very disappointed in the quality of this thing. This is why the rotary engine gets a bad name. Trying to cut corners on a rotary is definitely not acceptable. Anyway I was lucky since I have a VERY good friend at Malloy Mazda, so I was able to send the engine back and I opted for all new parts (separately). I'd like to point out that Malloy is NOT at fault here since they are not the people who build these engines. They are some of the most honest people I've ever met. Btw, for those that don't believe what I just wrote, drop me a line cause I've got pictures of "everything" I just mentioned. I suggest having "your" motor stripped and rebuilt the right way by KD! Might cost a few extra $$, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Good Luck!!

Not surprised at all...... boy were you lucky they would take that piece of junk back. Not replacing the rotor bearings? Wierd.
They're really not all that expensive.

The specs for rebuilding are pretty tough - I think that if even one component is borderline you are asking for trouble - kind of a weakest link in the chain thing. There is a lot of "eyeball" experience necessary when rebuilding these puppies that just can't be matched by anyone but an experienced aftermarket rebuilder. I've rebuilt tons of piston engines and I will still seek the advice of an experienced rotary tech before I would touch mine. They really are a piece of cake (or should I say sandwich?) to rebuild though. I don't see any way you can get a decent reman for under $4K, and that's not doing any mods.

Delco-Remy purchased the Mazda rotary reman operation in Jacksonville, FL. The only real difference is dealers no longer order rotaries direct from them via phone, and now use their standard parts ordering system. Ship mode is a now required second day order (3% freight chg) and that charge should NOT be passed onto customers, since dealers receive a 3% parts merchandising allowance to off-set the freight cost.
