Making The 7 My Daily
I DD my FD..
I drive it 70-80 miles a Day between work, school and the gym..
and the occasional track day..
only thing that doesn't work is the A/C, Cuz i don't want to take the dashboard out to fix the leak...
it left me stranded once.. due to a fuel pump issue.. other than that.. its fine
i hardly spend any time in the positive boost anyway..
but I DD it with the butt plug silencer just to make it tame at 7am when everyone in the hood is sleeping.. (my car is damn loud)

You should be alright given your mods. Just save up for a downpipe, AST and a radiator and you'll be good to go
I daily drove my FD for 5 years without having to do much in repairs. I spent money on basic maintenance and gas and more gas. I rebuilt the engine once but my engine was close to retiring and I was racing a Ferrari on the freeway on a chilly night
In these five years I've rebuilt the engine and replaced the tranny because the 5th gear syncro broke and I couldnt get it into reverse anymore
I just recently stopped daily driving it because it was my only car and now I have an older BMW to use as a daily driver. One of the downsides of daily driving an FD as your primary vehicle is that you dont have much space at all for anything which is something that the bimmer has plenty of

Cool Guys and Well its a long story why i cant keep up with my payment... well i can, its just the fact that i dont feel like spending 700 a month to keep a car that i know i will get rid of eventually yet for the 7 its going to be attached to me like a bad habit, but yea thanks for the input..
It depends on the condition of the car really. I DD my car and it has been very reliable, still never had a problem. ::crosses fingers:: I have 3" DP, 3" exhaust, stock cat, PFC, Apexi intakes, non-sequential conversion, everything blocked off, Greddy elbow, AST, etc etc. Basically its close to stock and runs great even as a DD. Just expect to be at the gas station alot.
1. It depends on the condition of your rx-7.
I always let mine warm up before really pushing the engine.
Even then I try and really take it easy on her. But I've heard that especially on the 3rd generation rx-7s you have to drive them very hard.
2. The gas consumption on these things is just terrible.
FWIW I DDd my first fd for a year, no probs, my second i've been DD for nearly two. Jeesh, its worth it because it puts a smile on my face every day. If you've got one, flaunt it!
There have been a few minor niggles (clutch flexible pipe burst, but fortunately only 100yards from my house; also ran out of fuel once and got stranded, because gauge broke, speedo stopped working too so replaced cluster) and i've spent some $$ on upgrades, regular oil/spark changes etc. all done by myself, because its fun!!! The car is mildly modded with PFC, gauges, etc. If the car blows up or is off the road it is cheaper to get a few taxis than buy a crap daily, where's the fun in that??!!
Fair play to the OP though, if i was on a tight budget the FD wouldn't perhaps be wise just on fuel costs but I love tinkering with the car and wouldn't be seen dead in a civic lol....

RX-7s are expensive daily drivers but not $700/month expensive. So as long as you're not taking a big loss on selling the Jeep (which can easily happen right now), it will net you some cash.
The AI is a great idea because it cools the actual combustion of the engine and directly reduces the number 1 reliability killer of this car: heat. So for $500 investment you can greatly extend the life of the engine, assuming it's in good shape already. Hopefully you're all caught up on maintenance.
In any case a beater car is always the best option. Take $3k of the cash for selling the Jeep and buy a cheap old corolla and you'll be much more comfortable and netting even more money per month. Sometimes the FD just likes to do something expensive, and it's not always the ideal time to be spending your cash. Ol trusty rusty will come to your rescue in a big way.

Yea i will take a hit on the jeep a little but it might be worth the hit right now... i just wanna make it go away, but it depends on how i can make some stuff happen, i just have to hold out for a year or so, then i will be able to sell some stuff and then be ok..... so in other words its a good thing to get rid of it now but yet its might be worth it to keep it and suck it up for a year...
I know this is confusing its just the fact that i cant make up my mined right now... i just got to pray about it....
and yes my 7 is in good condition lol the AC works, yet its not like i have to make up my mined right this very second or week about what to do with my jeep, but what ever goes on goes on....
just got to keep your head up and keep going right!!

I have used my RX7 as a daily driver for about 2 years now.
In the period between november to march I let the car rest in my garage though (winter and salt is not what my seven will be in touch with).
I got a new engine in when i bought the car and at the same time I changed everything from vacuum hoses, clutch, engine mounts etc. making it as reliable as possible together with a mild tune (pettit racing ecu, 3" exhaust, filters, smic)
If you look away from the insane gas mileage, my opinion is that the FD is extremely reliable conserning that the car is now 15 years old!!!!
Even if it's an RX7 it's still just a CAR, USE IT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT TO....

What? How old are you? 70?
You do know that the 7 is a sportscar and not an Escalade?!
End up hating it? Its a RX7, you'll never hate it
Exactly why he said get a cheap car, because the FD is not practical for everyday use.
Some people have different daily routines, (especially if you live in the city and do work/school), why put the car through that abuse?
You WOULD get tired of the car after months of that abuse.
Yeah, i totally agree that the best option is having a daily driver besides the RX7.
But not everyone can afford 2 cars or they have only space for one car (like me).
I have driven the RX7 daily for two years and never experienced the "problems" that some of you mentions...
Using the car is never abuse as long as you keep her in a good condition...
Or even better, find yourself a women with a big car that she rarely uses

Not every car will have good grace to it.
Some people experiences no problems, some people get one problem after another.
You're forgetting this car is 15 years old, minor things can break, doesnt have to be mechanical.
Fuel lines can break, oil lines can break, coolant lines can break, wiring can turn brittle and crack.
The car is old, even if my car was 100% perfect, i still wouldnt daily drive the thing.
Some people are different than others but i cant see why people do it. Even though they can. Im not saying dont enjoy the car but its much more convenient getting in a beater and just going for your daily routine.

Look at my first post here where I say the car indeed is 15 years old but still going strong. As long as you do regular maintenance on the car.
Ofcourse things can brake but hey, change it.
Although I understand that most of you use the RX7 only in weekends and stuff. Each to his own likings!

Yeah i saw your first post.
You first said the FD is "extremely reliable", then added the car is 15 years old.
Thats wrong on so many parts.
Sure if things break, you change it. Of course.
When driving an old turbo car, you'll be replacing ALOT of wear and tear parts.
Again = not practical for a daily driver

get a mazdaspeed3 and stay in the family for DD lol. or get a subbie... pretty darn reliable fun car.... thats what i plan on doing.
right now i have an SVT focus for my DD, later ill be getting either a mazdaspeed3 or a wrx as my daily... would only make sense to get an AWD or FWD depending where you live. And the mileage too...

I agree, its not "practical" as a daily driver but it's not useless as one either
^^
honestly, I would assume living in Europe that your daily driving does not amount to nearly what a lot of people in the States and Canada drive each day. When you're putting 100+ miles a day on a car like the FD, stuff just gets cooked and breaks. Not to mention, that it's just not economical. You'd be filling that huge tank every other day with premium. If you've got enough cash to not care about any of that, then I envy you. Plus, with the absolutely terrible drivers in the US and Canada, it's somewhat liberating to drive a shitbox for daily use. At least you don't get pissed when some moronic woman talking on a cell phone swings wide on a double left turn, and takes you out!
I'm not really one to talk though. I have my FD, and when the nice weather's here, I drive it 4 days out of the week. I enjoy it as much as I can, but i'm also willing to shell out the dough for gas, and I have a beater for when it breaks... which is probably more often than i'd like. A DD FD3S can be done, it's just not the smartest idea around here without a backup. Public transit is not an option for many many people.

Weird, but I daily drove my seven for a year and a half and it gave me no big problems whatsoever. Got a beater and only drove the FD once or twice a week and it seems like it didn't like that, giving me more problems in a month then when I daily drove it for a year.
I got a beater car to commute back and forth from work (at least 60 miles per day) to save me a ton of money ( $20 every five days instead of $60-70 every 3 days for gas). I have to say that even though it saves me money to drive the beater, I miss the power and luxury of my FD every freakin' day. If I didn't work so far from home I would daily my FD again.
