Question M2 Medium or Large??

Hey every1,

I plan on getting a SMIC later on, and was looking @ the M2 models, and they're the same price. What would be better for me? Right now, my FD is my daily and i drive it spirited almost everyday. Not like driving the wheels off of it, but i dont exactly just cruise, ya know? I might race it every so often, but this isnt a dedicated track car.
Lemme know which one would better suite me--medium or large.

Thanx,
Zach

If you stay with the stock turbo its better to have the medium becuase if is more effiecent (less pressure drop), but if you plan on going upgraded twins/single, you'll need the bigger one to flow enough cfm

Fitment is really the difference rather than performance. If you are doing the install yourself, and you don't want to relocate/move too much stuff around, then the Medium is your choice.

Isn't the original supplier of the intercoolers for M2 making them on his own and selling them thru the RX7 store???

From what I read everyone likes the M2 intercoolers...just that some have some minor fitment issues...with that being said the supplier on this next batch is suppose to "tweak" the design so that these issues are all in the past...

Has anyone heard anything more about these???

Cool Had both

I had a M2 med and now the M2 large. The only difference is, the larger one will take longer to heat soak and that you have to relocate the battery. As far as the performance, it is the same or better on the large one now, since the core on the large one is or has been for a while the same as the medium. Check SCC magazine they did a comparison on their RX7 project. Fitting or aligning the pipes with the IC sucks and the fit with the hood is too close for comfort. I read that some people had to remove the liner from the hood to be able to close it. Get the hoses with the hump and it will give you more flexibility to align the pipes.

This post contradicts itself. The Medium flows better, but the large flows better? They both flow about the same. The large should cool more. The large will take longer to heat soak, but will also take longer to un-heat-soak.

Both are excellent. If you don't want to move the battery, get the Medium. If you don't mind moving the battery and want absolutely maximum cooling from a SMIC, get the Large. I would guess that you would be better off with the Medium because of its ease of installation (no battery move required).

From the sound of this, it looks like the medium would be a better choice for me. Easier to install/fit and still provides good flow and cooling. I like the idea of not having to re-arrange crap to fit it in. Plus since this isnt a dedicated track car, i probably wouldnt use half the potential of the larger one.

Thanx to all who replied,
Zach

The ASP Medium would be best for ease of install, and lower pressure drop than the ASP Large core. Both probably flow well, it's just that the larger ASP core provides more volume for the stock twins to fill efficiently, than with the Medium IC core.

FWIW, I was at the Rx7 Store (4084 Anson Dr, Hilliard OH) just yesterday, and Jason has between 10 to 15 ASP Medium ICs ready to ship.

I was surprised how relatively "heavy" the ASP Medium Spearco core weighed compared with a Greddy 2-row FMIC core...

Didn't Jason sell Pettits large IC? Last time I checked form Pettit they were $1499 and it came with the Greddy elbow, is there some reason why nobody buys the Pettit stuff anymore?

136 and counting, atleast its not the FMIC, SMIC debate. And I thought you were the one that got after people for telling others to search. Maybee not.
I had the M2 med. before you should'nt be dissapointed with it.

I used to have the M2 medium and there was a notable power increase with it. The only thing I really didn't like was how the intercooler pipes fit. The pipe from the turbo to the intercooler was constantly rubbing against my hood liner and eventually banging against the hood itself. The very same pipe also banged against my strut tower bar taking parts of it off. However, I know of some people who don't have this problem, so I guess it's the luck of the draw depending on who is machining the piping for M2

I have the M2 Med. I was running it with my stock twins at 14PSI and I thought it worked great. It's perfect for a car that sees both street & track time. But I recently got a T04E single turbo kit and have NOT yet driven the car to see how the intercooler does with the new turbo. I'm anxiously waiting for a fabricator to custom make the polished aluminum pipes going from the cool air box to the turbo and from the turbo to the intercooler. I'll post again once I test the car out for a week or so.

I did 6 months ago. I have the Pettit Large IC, which is supposed to be a replica of the M2 Large.

I only have the stock to compare it to but I love it.

Kevin Wyum says the Pettit large is an unauthorized version of the ASP/M2 large IC core.

One question to everyone.I read about the M2 Med and it said we can retain the airpump. However when I called Jason, he said that the M2 Med I/C can't be used with the airpump.I'm confused now
