Yes it is an LSD. Most people upgrade for dragracing since ours don't seem to be up to the task of high rpm launches.

LSD = Limited Slip Differential

FD's have a Thorsen type limited slip. This type has spider gears that transfer the power to both rear axles.

As stated above, many whom drag race are forced to switch to a clutch type differential, as the stock thorsens will brake under high RPM launching. I broke 3 spider gears on a 5500 RPM launch on ET streets.

The 87-88 Turbo II had clutch type LSDs that swap directly into FD rear ends and are perported to be a strong as the KAAZ aftermarket LSDs. I just installed one but have yet to test it out.

Just as a small nit-picky correction, it's actually a Torsen LSD (not thorsen), and it uses helical planetary gears

The engagement is smoother and more predictable. They didnt really plan on having 400+whp launches on slicks in the equation...

that said, i broke 2 diffs, one on the street and one on the track (6.7-7k launch on etstreets = broken) and have sense installed a TII unit...I have yet to test it out at the track (or do any type of burnouts or anything sense) because i decided to change the setup of my car..again...

The Torsen is better for roadracing. The response is quicker and more linear, for better grip during cornering.
