Low oil pressure

i just got a FD

it has low oil pressure

at idle it is 0-10 psi and driving hwy spds about 30-40.

If i rev the engine at idle i can get it to about 100psi (way past 60 anyway)

are the stock pressures 30psi at idle and 60psi otherwise?

There apears to be no smoke out of the exhaust but an oil leak and smoke under the engine bay.

I have been debating on rebuilding the engine it has 100k but if it's something else like a turbo i migh thave to wait.

Seems to boost (no guage but a good pull from a butt dyno and sounds good with a good bov)

It's a marvel it even idles with all the vac leaks..........my fc would just laught at me if it was this nasty

btw it was WAY over filled and would drip constantly (about 1 drop per sec on the ground) but now it really doesn't drip after i drained like 4 qrts.

If i can fix the oil pressure i'd be set

fd's only take 4-4.5 quarts.

In anycase, try sanding down the oil sender unit's wire connector.

is there a good way to check pressure without a aftermarket guage (prolly not )?

i know......it was rediculously full.

what are stock pressure levels?

with out a huge leak i would think it would be hard to lose that much pressure due to the mechanical design of the oil pump.

Could over filling it hurt it?

Everything appears to be normal besides the low oil pressure and smoke from under the hood (getting less and less)..........

If you are taking this reading from the instrument panel then your oil pressure sending unit could be bad. FD's are notorious for having bad oil pressure sending units due to spring wear within the sender.

I would be more worried about the smoke from under the hood. A guy in St. Louis (I am not going to mention any names but you know who you are) over filled his oil pan consistantly until it ended up leaking out all over his engine bay and onto his driveway. He was mistaken about the size of the oil pan and was over filling it by 1.5 quarts.

i hope so.....i'll get the old oil washed off and test the unit out.

that'll save me a rebuild for now if it is a sender.

Although i was lookign forward to porting it

Check the oil pressure sending unit. Like formerlyporscheguy said, the sending unit is a POS. I'm on my second replacement one already. If your oil level is OK, it most likely is the sending unit- approx $65.00. You can check with a manual pressure gauge, but it involves removing the stock sending unit and plugging a threaded fitting into the hole and then to your gauge. The sending unit is in one of those places that you need to be double-jointed to get at. I'm sure you know there is a separate sending unit on the oil pan for oil *level*. If that red warning light (on the oil pressure gauge) and the associated beeper go off, then you need to immediately shut off the engine and add oil. sounds like that is not your problem, however. Good luck.

i constantly check the oil. You do that when it smokes and you just bought the car

i heel/toe to keep oil pressure (or apparent oil pressure)

i'll get a after market guage/sender to check actual readings.

But i would like to know what stock levels are for idle and running.

It not like when my TII over heated and i could see puffs of smokes on shifts. So i doubt it's a seal but if it is........oh well......i bought the car knowing full well it might need a rebuild. Just try'n to save a bit of money for other things for it (reliablilty mods)

sesshoumaru- I get approx 40 psi with warm engine at idle and approx 100 psi when rpms are over 2500.

Stock idle should be about 30 psi, the pressure should rise to 50-60 at 3000 rpm and then go up towards 120 near redline.
