Low Buget RX?

How much do you guys think I could get a 3rd gen RX7 for at the cheapest? I don't really care about miles, or even if it runs, the engine will be swapped soon enough. As long as the chassy is OK I'm happy. The better condition the happier I'd be, but I'm hoping to grab one up for under 5g's. I'm kind of tossing the idea around right now, not sure whether I'll get one or not, but knowing my price range would be helpful. Sorry if this is a double post, my internet decided it doesn't like me tonight.

Really dont think it is going to happen. for MANY reasons.
1)FDs with no engine and good body go for more then 5k
2)FDs with engine and bad body go for more then 5k
3)Any FD that is 5k is going to cost double that to make it a FD again.

I might be missing a few but thats about it.

If you know what your doing you can build a pretty stock-ish, sweet running driving FD for $9-11K. If you don't know exactly what your doing you'll spend $20K on the same car.

I didn't realize they went for so much What would a decent price range be for an FD with a good body and dead/no engine?

Jeff, I definately don't know exactly what I'm doing lol. An engine swap is managable, along with some other jobs, but I don't have a whole lot of experience with rotaries, so that would all be new for me.

Most rolling chassis cars go for like 8 to 10k for nice ones.

One must remember, these cars were $40k brand new. They're not cheap at all.

My best advice is to just keep tabs on autotrader.com, or something else local, daily. I probably would be driving an FD instead of an FC right now had my ex-mechanic father got in from a business trip 1 day earlier so i could have him check out the car... It was a one-owner car and he had modded it up a little, was running, but i dont know how good, i ran the vin and it came out clear, no wrecks... and he was asking 4,500 for a 93 5 spd. That thing sold pretty much 2 days after it was posted.

Because I'm a cheap sonofabitch. I don't have a job at the moment because I'm in school, I'm looking for a job but I doubt I'll get paid enough to get a 28g car within the next 7 years, especially working part time. A friend works in a shop and can get me tools and help me out with work that I can't handle on my own, so I'm not too worried about work..

But that's why I'm here, right? So you guys can tell me I'm an idiot and not gonna find a 5g FD..I could probably manage 8-10 later next year, depending on whether or not I find a job..What do you think it would take to make one drivable? Would it just be cheaper to buy one for 24,000 that runs?

You can find a good running one in the 15-20k range. Just check AutoTrader. They aren't cheap cars though so you have to always be ready when something breaks. If you never depend on it, then you will love it. Depend on it and you will hate these cars with a passion.

Yep, get lost. Seriously though, this car is definitly not for your budget. It is not a cheap car to keep in top shape, and the ones in good shape command higher prices. There are a few around that have had little to no problems with those cars, but they are among the very few.

Heh, you guys are discouraging me. Do they really have THAT many problems? How often do you need to fix something on one of these things? I want one, but if it's gonna cost me two grand a year just to keep it running then I don't know.

Most will agree. The best mod to these cars is a daily driver. They break. Its as simple as that. I like having new people join the club and enjoy these cars. But you have to be sure you can afford one because the cost goes far beyond the intial price of the car.

cheap and FD dont even belong in the same sentence. The best way to describe it is from another persons license plate on this site: MNY PIT.

Talking

I think jada toys or kyosho can help ya, dirt cheap fds. Youll never have to fix one of those, and they seem to be in mint condition always, heh. Not trying to discourage, but how about buying an FC first and see if the rotary is the car for you.

Depends, how much cheaper is an FC? I could go for one, and actually considered it, I just figured it would come out being cheaper buying one car than two

Quite a bit. For the price of a good condition FD, you could probably purchase 2 or more FC's. Depending on the FC model & condition of course.

I found an FD for $6 once.

1) It needed an engine
2) It had front frame damage
3) The odometer wasn't working (wonder why )
4) The transmission needed to be rebuilt
5) The front windshield was cracked
6) The exhaust was falling apart
7) The wheels looked like the car went offroading
8) The floor pan was pushed up (so maybe it DID go offroading)
9) The entire interior needed to be replaced (looked like water/mud damage)

Possible "I fell in the canal" car

I test drove it and it was the worst experience ever.

I guess that's about it. Shop was asking $6000, so YEAH, there are some fixer uppers out there.....

I have a friend who bought one with the coolant seal leaking for 2,800 all he needs is a rebuild. only thing bad is it has that ugly veilside kit on it. I think it has like 150,000 miles on it but he told me it was changed and had another gauge cluster. the paint was nice. It had 17's on it and was actally in really nice shape. Almost makes me upset i paid 13,500 on mine but hey he still needs a motor. but he did get 2 sets of turbos with it also and the 1's in the car seem good.

Wake up. If your budget is that low, you should be looking at 2nd gen RX-7s.

If anyone is interested my wife is selling her black 93 R1. It has @ 107K on the chassy and @60-70K on the engine. The entire engine was replaced by Mazda, except for one turbo and the block under the lemmon law. The car is stock. Car is located in Virginia and has just had a left rear quarter panel dent repaired and repainted. The entire car was worked on to bring the paint back to it's original shine. I will post a picture as soon as I get it. Asking $17,500 OBO.

If you're looking for a good priced decent car...buy a second. Not that expensive, and nice cars all around also.

cheap

Not true, the cars are out there the problem is do you care about the title. I got mine for 3500 with engine/trans, there was some external dents and about half of the interior was missing, aside from that the car was fine. It also has a salvage title. I dont care though, I love this car and I'll never get rid of it.

Like I said it all depends how far youre willing to go. But truly.. yes, a clean titled project cars are north of 5k though. Good luck!
