A friend works in a shop and can get me tools and help me out with work that I can't handle on my own, so I'm not too worried about work..
But that's why I'm here, right? So you guys can tell me I'm an idiot and not gonna find a 5g FD..I could probably manage 8-10 later next year, depending on whether or not I find a job..What do you think it would take to make one drivable? Would it just be cheaper to buy one for 24,000 that runs?

I got mine for 3500 with engine/trans, there was some external dents and about half of the interior was missing, aside from that the car was fine. It also has a salvage title. I dont care though, I love this car and I'll never get rid of it.
Like I said it all depends how far youre willing to go. But truly.. yes, a clean titled project cars are north of 5k though. Good luck!

Well said man,
Everyone is telling him what he can and can't find.
You can find anything if you look for it. When he says 5G, then start lookin. That is the point of a project, to fix things. So go pick it up for the initial price and then start searchin for parts. If you have a lot of time then you will slowly have your FD the way U want it.
And you will have 100X more satisfaction knowing that you built the car yourself, I wish I had done that. I wanna sell mine, so I can start a project car from scratch.

As long as the chassy is OK I'm happy. The better condition the happier I'd be, but I'm hoping to grab one up for under 5g's. I'm kind of tossing the idea around right now, not sure whether I'll get one or not, but knowing my price range would be helpful. Sorry if this is a double post, my internet decided it doesn't like me tonight.
most likely Savage title..
I don't mind if it's a salvage title in the slightest. The thing I'm really thinking about now is how much you guys said they break down or have problems..It would be a daily driver for me, minus summer, is it safe to rely on them that much?

AGREE. 100%. I am putting about 8.5G into mine right now to make it reliable. Read my signature and you will understand. I decided to the conversion after my motor blew a o-ring 2 monthes after I bought it and now almost 1.5 years later she is about to run again.
If you want to know how reliable these cars are post a thread "How many FD are not running right now and why?" And you will find out.
Look, either listen to us or don't. The truly knowledgable people here have already told you that you cannot afford this car, given what you've told us. That's the truth, whether you want to hear it or not.
I strongly suggest you pick up a cheaper, simpler, and more widely available car. Wait until you are in a position to properly afford this car.

lol
First off, an FD under 10k is going to need a new motor. Since you know nothing about these cars your going to have to pay someone to put the motor in. Count on 5 grand.
2k per year to keep these cars up? Your joking right? Your looking at the wrong car, this is one of the most unreliable cars ever made, no joke. Awesome vehicle but plan for about 1k per month. Financing is a bitch since its over 10 years old and insurance for you would be nuts on this car. Expect 300 per month. If you pay cash the insurance will be less.
If you want an FD that starts all the time expect to pay 13k and always have 4k sitting around for the emergency that will happen at some point. Not a good choice for a poor college student.
Sorry, you couldn't even afford an FC.

Apparently you missed my original post, I said I'm on a tight budget initially, not for life. I also said I was looking for an FD without an engine for a project car and eventually a daily driver. Then I went as far as to say that I had access to a shop and tools, a shop full of people who do know RX's. I've got the resources, I'm doing some looking around and you come in thinking you know me and laughing at me. If you don't have something worth my time then don't bother posting.
I paid 2k for my FD shell.
For 1k i have gotten an entire black interior including gauges consoles, door panels, strut bar rear carpet, bins, fenders an entire wiring harness and a tranny with a 3rd gear grind.
The only things left on my list to get the car running are engine turbo fmic and ALOT of other misc parts. I have a total of 9k left to spend on the car in upgrades and purchases. I am wanting to keep the total spent on the car to under 12k, and have it run a mid to low 12. Not forseeing a problem in my book.
I could put it completely back to stock for a total of 6k invested on a car that sells between 9k and 15k. sell it and make all my money back and more..
Budget RX7 is a possibility, just takes patience, alot of knowledge, and a spare spot in the garage. (understanding wives help also)

Cheap and FD RX-7 don't belong in the same sentence or context. Parts are expensive, labor is expensive (if you can't do it yourself). If you buy some ragged out POS for $7,000, expect to spent at least that much getting it running and looking right. Do your self a favor and if you really must have an RX-7 look at a FB or FC.
