Loud Violant Clunking?
I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what the problem I'm experiencing might be? I started hearing this loud violent clunk from the right rear of the car a bit ago. After talking w/ numerous people all of which pointing to the suspension I tore apart my suspension and put in my set of unobtanium bushings as well as replacing all of the ball joints on the suspect side of the car. I put everything back together and torqued it all down to the factory specs. The clunk is still there. It comes going forward and reverse (in and out of driveway) at very low speeds as well as higher speeds (before I did the work). It's soo bad I don't want to drive the car. Every part of the suspension has been replaced on the suspect side (M2 trailing, M2 tow, Unobtanium bushings, Factory ball joints in the lower and upper control arms, even the what ever it was in the inner lower arm). The clunk like I said is very loud. The exhaust moves like it was hit w/ a sledge hammer when the noise happens. While doing the suspension work I changed the diff fluid and found a tooth in the oil. Something in the diff or perhaps the rear axel? There aren't any shops I trust that can take a look at it for some time so I'm kind of dead in the water.
Sounds like you found the problem. Just a matter of who is going to fix it. I suggest you pull out the rear end and take a look. You may be able to see where the problem is. Rotary Reliability and Racing isn't too far from you. They should be able to fix it, or point you in the right direction.
OK so if it's the differential will an aftermarket LSD fix the problem? I don't fully understand what they replace inside the diff. Do I need to take out the diff to determin where the tooth came from or will the LSD replace everything inside?
Well I took out the diff and it turns out that one tooth on the drain magnet was just one of 100's of pieces. Looks like a LSD is in order. The ring and pinion look unharmed. However the inner gears are almost all broke off. Couldn't get a good pic of the teeth though.
Glad that you found the problem. You saved yourself a lot of money finding the problem and pulling out the rear end. Are you going to try to fix it yourself, take in somewhere, or buy a replacement?

Yeah I'm going to fix it myself. It's pretty apparent what's broken. I've replaced the 5th gear synchro in my transmission a few years ago so the diff shouldn't be that hard. Just need to locate a LSD quicky. Hoping to go to the track next weekend.
I'll make sure and check my PPF as well. As violent as the rear end was when it was breaking teeth it wouldn't surprise me if it cracked the thing.
