LOUD backfire and now it won't start

Ok so had the front of the car jacked up the other day (clutch probs) and started her up, ran fine for 20-30 sec then what sounded like a gun shot from the exhaust and then she ran fine. Shut the car off and left it as it was dark, started her up the following day and she backfired immediatly and then the idle started to drop, adjusted the screw but the idle kept dropping and then the car died, tried to start it but only the starter motor could be hear, except twice when the car sounded like it was about to start but failed to do so.

What could cause this? MAP sensor? TPS? Fooked engine?

The pipe from the master to the slave cylinder for the clutch split a few days before this and i got brake fluid all over the engine bay, oil filter, HT leads (changed these to magnacor one about 1 month ago) so could this have caused any probs?

Car is a 93 FD, with knightsport ecu, racing beat full exhaust system catless, xs power intercooler, running 14psi.

Thanks for any advice/help

Rob

When that happened to me it wasn't good.

Pull your spark plugs and check those first.

though they do say blowing an engine is difficult at idle.. im guessing not impossible?

Maybe its flooded now? This wont explain why the idle kept dropping though

People have suggest that my spark plugs could be shot or it could be the leads? I'll have to get them sparkies out tonight and have a look at them, running 9's all round due to 14psi, have tried 7'2 and 9's also. Would this effect it?

what other variable could have changed before the backfiring occured?

at idle, a defective MAP sensor wouldn't do anything....

the TPS could have caused that problem so that's something that you should look into.

if you changed your wires a month ago you would have noticed problems before now, unless it was a gradual deteriorating problem. i'm not saying it isn't impossible but it's unlikely that it's your wires.

i'd clean her up and run a full check on the ignition/fuel system.

Sounds like you threw a rod. Check the block for holes.

It was my plugs, they were covered in carbon etc, it's strange cause i only changed them 2 months ago and have hardly driven the car? Atleast it is working now tho, just need my clutch to disengage and i can take her out for a blast!
Thanks for the advice guys.

Ha ... mine blew at idle ... sitting in traffic at 5:45 a.m. I had driven about a mile. It just cut off and threw a loud backfire. Internally it looked like I blew it at 10,000 RPM. Go figure.
