lightweight flywheel question

Im ordering a brand new transmission to replace my 172K worn out one, I have researched and believe a light flywheel is definately for me. My clutch is an ACT S/S and was replaced about 1 and a half years. Can the flywheel be replaced without replacing the clutch? Im not sure how this works. Also, is there any additional labor to replace a flywheel when the transmission is out?

Thanks

The clutch bolts to the flywheel. Most people go with a different flywheel when they need a new clutch since the tranny is going to be out anyway.

Idle may hunt a little bit with the light flywheel.

Yes, it usually the it's flywheel surface that needs to be inspected/replaced when the clutch is replace (which doesn't necessarily go the other way around).

As for extra labor, they'll probably charge you an additional hour of work, but that should be it.

replace the tranny with another new mazda one? how did you manage that? i thought most were just reconditioned units and stuff, my tranny is getting a bit worse for wear and im considering getting it reconditioned, though if the price isnt a great deal more, a completely new one would be nice. can you pls post some details so i can have a look at costs ect.

thnx

Well,

If you call the Mazda dealer (I called Malloy Mazda and spoke with Ray). They sell Factory New (mazda does not do remans or rebuilds). These are completely new with all new gears, even the shifter is new, etc. Cost in the states are 2100-2500 depending on the dealer you buy it from.

For me it costs 1750 to rebuild it (california, yuk) or I can pay 2200 for a tranny and 250 to have it installed. So for 700 bucks, its brand new.

Zero,

How many miles do you have on the clutch? How many drag races? Drag racing is probably the worst thing you can do to a clutch disk. You may want to consider replacing the disk if it is worn. The pressure plate is probably fine. I suggest that you compare the disk to a new one. See exactly how much has been worn off. I have not priced disks, but I wouldn't think they are that expensive. You don't want to have to pull the tranny again in 10k to replace it.

I think you will like the light flywheel. Definitely a good mod to do when the tranny is out.

I have an act s/s with about 25K miles on it. I paid 700 labor and like 450 for the disk last year so I have no plans to replace it again. It feels fine.

You probably paid $450 for the pressure plate AND the disk. With 25k on it, and the drag racing you do, I would definitely check the disk for wear. That should be easy to do, and won't cost anything. I am not suggesting that you replace the pressure plate.
