Question Leaky ABS Pump???

Ok when I bought my 3rd gen RX7 I noticed that the brake fluid kept going down after refilling it. After check the whole brakes system and finding no leaks anywhere a friend checked the ABS Pump and it was leaking fluid. I replaced the leaky ABS Pump with another one, but I cant test drive the car yet because I havent bled my brakes yet lol. my question is..... Is the ABS pump known to leak easily on these cars????

yes its a problem on these cars. I replaced mine only to have it leak again after a short time. expensive part if purchased new from the dealer. the best thing to do is get a downpipe on the car to reduce the heat under the hood. the downpipe runs just below the abs pump so reducing the heat will help save this part.

Yeah I had this happen. I replaced it with a used one and after that it was fine (its been quite a few years now). New ones are very expensive, like $1000, and you can pick up used ones for very cheap (I think I got mine for $150) so its worth a shot. I'd call this a "known but uncommon" problem.

I paid $300.00 for mine used from a mazda salvage place before I knew about the forum. Man did I get taken!... and after a year its showing signs of a leaking again. so I don't know what to do now. replace it new or try used again.

ok guys this might sound kinda stupid but I thought id ask anyway lol, is there any kind of special sealant(RTV for example) that I might be able to use as a permanent fix to form a flexible gasket around the ABS pumps leaky cylinders? just thought id ask =)

you could try some sealer. but the problem would be getting the area dry first so the rtv sealant would stick. spray the area with carb cleaner first this will remove the brake fluid then try the sealer. get some clear sealant so it wont look ghetto and apply a small amount around the towers. let us know how it works.

It may be possible, but we are talking about a primary safety feature of your car. Short of having the pump rebuilt, I would not advise it. If you are involved in a serious accident and some one inspecting the car sees that you have ghetto rigged the ABS pump, you may be looking at some serious liability.

ok well I decided to not use a sealer, because even if I can use a sealer that will work properly its gonna be VERY expensive and I might not use it properlyI heard of some RTV I can use that will actually seal brake fluid and it lasts a long time and hold well to pressure but the sealant cost $100 for a little tube! lol not worth the money. I will jut stick to buying a used ABS pump, ill try and find 1 with low mileage
