Unhappy Leaking fluid, What is it?

Some of you may have read about the 06 wrx i was going to race, so i went to take the 7 for a spin to make sure everything was still working properly sense it's been in the garage for a few months. Yes i start it at least once a week and let it warm up to operating temps and then turn it off to keep everything lubricated and working. Well when i pulled the car out i noticed a puddle of oil or trans fluid on the ground. I'm not sure which it is....sounds stupid i know. It doesn't have much of a smell at all. Looks to be the color of oil and feels like oil but trans fluid is very similar. When i jacked up the car, the leak seems to be coming from under the oil filter. In that general area at least. The clutch housing has the stuff on it and its all running down the side of the engine where the spark plugs are. But its mostly just all over everything under the engine which is making it difficult to locate the source of the leak. The support bar or whatever it is that runs across under there (under the clutch housing) is covered in caked on black fluid and dirt. So anyways, i'm broke at the moment so i need as much help as i can get so i can try to fix this myself. Are there any places in that area that generally are common problems with leaks? Any suggestion will be very helpful! Thanks ahead of time for your help.........please help..........

I had a similiar issue, oil all over the crossmember, on the plug side of the engine, by the oil filter. For me, the problem was the two O rings under the oil pedestal. They're only a couple of bucks each. You might want to check the oil filler neck too, there's an O ring that goes bad at the base of it. BTW, when I changed the pedestal O rings they were as brittle as potato chips....

The oil filter pedestal o-rings are a common point of leakage. It sounds like that is your problem. Fortunately, it is relatively easy and cheap to fix (compared to rear main seal or other possible points of leakage, etc.).

If it's still leaking, take it to a car wash that will wash the underside of the car, or even just go clean it by hand at a manual car wash. Clean that underside really good so you can start over to trace down that leak.

If I'm not mistaken, oil gives off a rainbow effect, and tranny fluid has a reddish tint to it. Very different.

Every automatic trans. fluid I have worked with was red. Regular ol' tranny oil is the same color as engine oil, usually thicker though.

My trans and diff oils are purple.
