Knocking from rear ....still

Hi guys,

I have a 2002 JDM type r Bathurst with a knocking coming from the rear right of the car. it's only noticeable on pull off and braking at low speed and been driving me crazy trying to find it. it's one of those niggles on the car I'd really like to sort out.

so far I've replaced / tried the following in the last 9 months / 5000kms

replaced/new
superpro + powerflex bushes throughout inc diff
j auto pillow ***** all round
project mu brake pads
twin Flex z coilovers
OEM stablizier links

checked caliper bolts
checked exhaust not knocking
checked diff bolts and bushings
checked PPF for cracks
checked spare wheel internals for loose items
checked stabilizer bar bushings

any other suggestions on what it could be or to check? I'm running out of ideas.

Thanks

Jack up the rear of the car, spin one wheel, and see if the other wheel spins in the same direction.

If it does, you have a clutch pack LSD that might be making noise.

Do your coilovers have spherical bushing top mounts?

I assume you've checked that your coilover lock rings are tight.

You can also unhook the rear stabilizer bar to see if it's your links.

It finally took replacing the torsen dif, ring and pinion gear and dif-to-wheels drive shafts for my clicking like that to disappear. I don't know which was the issue.

My clicking was when and I did slow figures eights in a parking lot to listen for it.

I took the occasion to put in the 4.3:1 ring and pinion gear from a Type RZ/RS/Spirit R.

(Very worth it for the increased jump.)

Some folk had advised me to look for cracks in the unibody frame.

Also perhaps check the pillow ***** again. I had aftermarket ones that starting clicking immediately after installation.

I suppose you have checked your dust shields are not bent.

great suggestions, thanks

I do have a Cusco Rs LSD installed but the noise is distinctly different from the clutch pack engaging and chatter im now used to. It only seems to be from the right hand side too, not central .

Ive got new links installed and the issue still remains. One thing to mention is that if i reverse (i get 1 clunk) and then move forward very very slowly then no clunk, its only when i then accelrate at a reasonable speed that the clunk happens again so its definately like something is moving backwards and forwards. happens when braking but only when you brake immediately after getting the forward motion clunk. It does not clunk repeatedly on braking.

i will check the pillowballs again for binding perhaps

Did you replace or rebush the toe links as well as the larger arms?

You might have to get under the car on jackstands and have someone stop and start the car (with the handbrake on to provide some load).
Proximity to the issue is key in trying to pinpoint where it's coming from.
Ultimately you might have to put your hand on the part (if it's safe to do so) to tell exactly where the vibration is strongest.

I am trying to diagnose a clunk in my steering system, but no one in my family is strong enough to wiggle the steering wheel hard enough. Haha.
