Key goes in ignition and turns to the first click, but won't go further, please help!

Got this dumb problem. I insert the key in the ignition and turn it until it reaches the first click. However, after that, it will not turn any more. I tried using wd-40 to loosen anything up, but still no luck. I turned it quickly, slowly, with and without force. Got any ideas?
Anything will help, thanks guys!

Check to see if your key is cracking, like the key itself. That might explain it.... Also test the torisonal rigidity of the key to see that when you are turning the key is turning. That is how I found out my key was cracked.

Hope it helps,
Alex

I went last night and purchased 2 extra spares, same problem.
Also, the key(s) work fine as far as locking/unlocking the car. Goes in easily

Did you accidentally turn the steering wheel and lock it? try moving the wheel back and forth while turning the key forward.

Yep, I'm with Goodfella as to the wheel being turned holding tension on the locking mechanisim. It doesn't take much tension to keep the lock from turning.

sometimes after years of use the tumblers in the ignition cylinder will wear down. just another idea, if nothing else works you could take it to your dealer or local locksmith and have the tumblers check out.

If it turns to the first position it's not the tumblers, it's in the ignition/sterring wheel lock assembley, alittle moving of the steering wheel will free it up.

he wouldn't be able to get it to turn at all if that were the case, he said he can get it one turn forward then it gets stuck... that was my first instinct as well but i doubt thats the problem...

The first turn you can do with it in wheel lock. Its the turn after that then the wheel lock prohibits you. Turn the wheel(LIGHTLY) left to right while trying to turn the key in the ignition.

Yep! I thought everyone knew to do this. Many cars have this same issue.

Just shake the wheel back and forth a little while trying to turn the key.

I've tried many times turning the wheel back and fourth (I know about the steering wheel lock) however that did not do the trick. I looked closely and found out that it doesn't even go to the first click, it stops half way there.
I am able to fully turn the key and start the car but only after messing with it for 10 min. By "messing" with it, I mean twisting the key fast, slow, with force, shaking, etc.
I think it needs a new ignition mechanism system cylinder; for lack of a better name.
Anyone know if a lock smith can do the trick?
Thanks for the input

If all else fails call a locksmith. I recently had a key break in half in my ignition, and I ended up having a local locksmith come out and remove it (~100).

really? haven't had this happen (locked wheel) in my FD yet, my other cars they key wont turn at all with the wheel locked, in my subaru it is actually quite annoying because it takes a second to jiggle it loose...
