Question Just started new motor, got a question

I just finished starting up a new motor, everything is running great except for one. The idle is too high, around 1200 rpm.
I have already adjusted the air bleed screw all the way down. Backed off the idle adjust set screw as far as it'll go. Any other ideas?? Anyone, anyone.......Bueller?

check for vacuum leaks.

Too bad you messed with all the screws. They rarely need to be adjusted. Usually something else is wrong, like a vacuum leak.

thanks for the suggestion, that was one of the first things I thought of too. But my vacuum is reading a steady 18inHg. I gues it's possible but could it be anything else?

I second the vacuum leak suggestion. Since your engine is running at 18 in Hg at 1200 rpm, that isn't really an accurate reading for good vacuum at idle. For example, my engine produces about 10 in Hg at idle (~700 rpm), but at 1200 rpm it makes about 18 in.

Check for vacuum leaks. It could also be your idle air control motor.

Arrow Leak

Well, you look like you did some work to make sure that it sin't a vacume leak. Only other thing that I can think of is that screwy ISC (Idle Speed Control).

To get this to work right you need to have (get ready for this) the crank angle sensor, pressure sensor, throttle position sensor, water/intake air thermosensors, E/L Unit, A/C switch and Pressure Switch, EC-AT CU and the Neutral Clutch Switch (automatic moslty for this) all feeding the ECU (whew!!).

The part that gets the result of all this is the ISC solenoid that is on the back of your throttle body. It opens up to bypass air around the throttle body butterflies to avoid lots of problems and keep your engine turning at the target rpm.

That and the AWS (Accelerated warm-up system) might not be closed all the way (starting your car in first gear, will bypass this).

Another quick check, my idle went up for a while when my cruise control cable slipped from its place on the throttle body.

So if you didn't adjust the 'do not adjust' screws on the throttle body and you don't have a vacume leak, these are possibilites. Although I would have to say that 1200 RPM is the perfect idle for a vacume leak or a bad or backwards check valve.

Hope some of that helps!!

Thanks for the suggestions.
O.K. Let's go down this long list.
Double throttle - eliminated
We checked all sensor inputs on the PFC and seems o.k.
It's a 5 speed, so no AT stuff.
Not sure how you can check the TPS, but I'll go through the manual.
By the way, the Idle is now at 1K. I wonder if it could be the ECU re-adjusting? (how long would that take?)

can't help with the idle problem

I'd think after about 30 min of driving around your computer should figure out whats happening

make sure to break in the motor for at least 1500 and maybe till 2000 just to be safe. Change the oil after the first 1000 and then after the second 1000 and then after that every 2k forever.

just my suggestions....from what ive experienced

good luck

Sorry to hear about that, but I had the same problem with my FD when we put my new motor in. But I was able to fix the problem just by doing this...

stand on the driver's side engine bay, using a 10mm w/ a short extention and take off the bottom two screws from the elbow, push the catch tank off of the two bottom studs, then fell around on the bottom side of the TB and you'll feel a small hole, in the hole (after the car has been warmed up) stick a flat head screwdriver in that hole and turn it counter clockwise until the desired idle.

I don't know if you have already tried this, and if you have then well....I have no clue as to what else it might be other than vacuum leaks! Well good luck, keep me informed either way!

My problem was the thermo wax valve. It is supposed to settle the idle after the car warms up but if it is jammed or faulty it will keep the idle up. It is located by the firewall on the driver's side, back of the throttle body. The manual should give you info on how to check it. I just replaced mine. $50.00 from Mazda. Just a thought.

That's too far to drive, I don't need to do that any more

Alright change of plans we're having a rx-7 meet at my house but sexxy7 is the only one that'll get directions.
