Right now all she has is the Kakimoto Racing cat back exhaust, but ultimately I'd like to add a bigger intercooler, pod intakes, aftermarket ECU, a vented hood and a subtle body kit to enhance her lines, not something that changes the shape.I still want people to know it's an RX-7 and not some boy-racer christmas tree. Since she's a Spirit I don't want to mess with her too much.

I'm new to this forum and was just wondering that as the owner of a 2002 RX-7 with 46 000K's, what types of engine/gearbox oil/coolant you'd recommend. Should I go and purchase a metal AST, or are the plastic ones in these later models OK?.I'm on the North Shore in Sydney and was wondering if you can recommend a good place for servicings/engine work?

For the plastic AST, they are quite reliable as they come new from the factory - what can happen is the heat and coolant makes them brittle and then they're a problem. If you like stock, put in a new radiator, AST, and all coolant hoses at 60k and you'll be fine. If you would prefer, put in aftermarket aluminum parts and then you'll never have to wonder about it again.

alot of people here hang all this **** off there FDs and they look like ***. mazda got it right with the spirt R. id lose the fart can and put on a nice subtle duel tip. ive spent alot of money to get the 99spec look and you have it right out of the box. enjoy it!

Congrats! That is one beautiful piece of machinery you got there mate! Looks like your patience paid-off. I hope one day to own one, but until then my VR R2 will have to do for now.As far as mods: I'd say keep the "fart-can", install some coilovers and do your reliability mods to include a c/f vented hood and change-out your fluids.

well as it was the last production rx7, mazda used up any left over performance parts it had, for starters it got an extra 25hp, it got alot of added features that were either optional or not available with other models.

Ok no one has answered my question yet. When you start modifying an FD they are both the same Spirit R, or series 6. I guess all Im saying is the chasi is the same and so is the suspension geometry. Im not trying to "hate" or antthing I just want to know what the big difference is between the Spirit R and series 6. I know factory the Spirit R is better but when suspensions start getting upgraded and engines are moded these are both the same car, right?

Thanks for all the great comments/suggestions guys...
I'm only really interested in reliability mods as opposed to short-lived power mods as I want to keep this car in great condition for as long as possible. My main concern is the alu ast, and opening her up more so she breathes better and keeps her eng temp down, so anything that acheives that without altering her looks or reliability is fine by me. I will keep the "fart can" though as it gives her a real deep throaty growl without being offensively loud (local cops just love to defect altered cars here)
2 small items that are missing though are the two vertical black plastic trim panels that sit either side of the factory stereo unit.When the previous owner removed his boom box and re-installed the original one he lost these two pieces, so I'm looking to refit theses two items.If anyone has these pieces I'd gladly offer to buy them at a reasonable cost.

Congratulations. If only we could bring in a street legal Spirit R to the states, turning our old ones into lookalikes just doesn't cut it.
Keep it as near to orginal as possible.
As to our reliability mods, keep in mind that us Americans stopped getting the car before Mazda started tweaking it. The Japanese members would have much better knowledge of the shortcomings.

You are essentially correct, I think the big attraction for the Spirit is that they were the final machines to come off the production line, and some of them (i don't know how many) were painted Titanium, a colour specific to the Sprirt and no other FD. The suspension are factory fitted Bilstein's which I don't think any other FD had, except the RZ.You are correct is saying that any suspension/performance upgrades would easily meet/ exceed what's fitted to the Spirit.I too thought about that before purchasing, as I said in my earlier post I was ready to go for a 2002 RS that I was prepared to "pimp", but at the end of the day, that's what I'd have: a pimped RS, NOT a limited edition/end of the line Spirit R.

There were a few other changes, like better brakes, better cooling, updated front bumper cover and tail lights, as well, but I don't know much about them.
Effectively, all FDs are FDs and can be converted into any other FD with little effort and lots of money. If you wanted to make a Spirit R clone, it'd be fairly easy. It's desirable because it's the last RX-7, it's rather new, and it had a signifigant number of improvements over the S6 right out of the factory.
