Just got my first car, an FD!

Hey guys, I just bought my first car of my own yesterday, a mint 1993 RX7! I'm only 19, but I've been working part time jobs for about 5 years, and I had about 22 thousand in my bank account. A friend of my Dad's bought a 1993 RX7 brand new off the dealership, and he decided to sell the car. It has 72 thousand KM's on it (only about 45 thousand miles!) the motor runs perfectly doesn't smoke or anything, the brakes were just done, the clutch has about 4000 KM's on it, it has brand new tires, and a whole folder full of of receipts and records, he's wrote everything down. I bought the car off of him for 18 thousand Canadian, which works out to be about 13 thousand US dollars! As long as I keep my marks up in school my parents are paying for all the insurance, I bought the car with all of my own money, I have to pay for all gas, maintainance, repairs, and stuff like that. If I get any ticket they're going to make me pay for my own insurance, which is fine because insurance is so rediculously high that I would not be able to drive the car. I'm so happy with this, words can't describe it! I spent about 8 hours driving it yesterday, I'm in love. The seats are great, the shifter feels good, the gauges are good looking and easy to read, the power is smooth and strong, and it handles amazingly. Since I have a few thousand left over after the purchase of the car, I already ordered a TurboTrix 3" downpipe and midpipe, Apexi GT-Spec exhaust, and Tein coilovers, totally depleting my bank account but it's all worth it

Congrats. Sounds like a nice car. If you spend some time reading, you will find that there are a number of threads regarding young drivers like you, who are inexperienced, and wind up wrecking the car. I hope you will take it easy with the car, and not become one of those statistics.

Enjoy your new car, but don't try to push it

good luck with your new purchase....but you better cancel that order you just put in and do some more research....Reliability Mods FIRST!!!! if you run a midpipe on your setup...you WILL blow your motor....

I've driven a bunch of fast cars before (Dad has a Z06, 69 Camaro, had a 911 turbo, had a viper) so it's not like I'm just jumping in going from a Civic or something, I do have a fair amount of seat time in fast cars, I'm just thrilled that this one is actually mine

What's so bad about a midpipe? A local shop here had one turbotrix 3" downpipe and midpipe that he was trying to get rid of, so he sold em to me as a pair, which is why I got them. Will the motor run too lean with the MP, or what? I'm hoping it's ok to put a catback on the car though, isn't it?

Do some reading before doing anything to your car.

your turbos will creep with a midpipe (more than likely) more PSI without tunning and proper fuel is asking for trouble..... blown motor trouble

The catback and DP are fine to put on the car. Just don't add the midpipe until you get an ECU that will support it. The MP will cause uncontrollable boost and will lean out your car in a hurry. There are tons and tons of threads talking about the "3 mod rule" and whatnot. Just do a search and read up.

Also, watch out for the old men on here that will bash and bash some more about a 19 year-old with an FD. They are just senile.

Read the newbie stickies to learn about modding the car. Yes a midpipe will cause you to run more boost than the stock ECU can support so it will run lean and break the apex seals.

By reading the newbie stickies you will learn about this. A lot of knowledge is out there waiting to be had. Since you already depleted your bank account, I'm sure you don't want to spend another $5k to replace the motor and turbos. When the motor blows, the pieces of the apex seals go through the turbos and often **** them up too.

Rotaries are very different from piston engines. Read and learn b4 you make a mistake and wind up ******* up the car.

Just put on the downpipe, catback, and intake then don't do anything else until you have a new ECU.

Ok, so i'll leave the midpipe in the closet till I upgrade the fuel system and ECU. Does a downpipe cause boost creep problems too?

This forum just goes way too fast for me, by the time I wrote this down there were 2 more replys I'll run the exhaust and downpipe, enjoy driving my car for the last 2 months before winter, then keep saving up for more over the winter.

No the down pipe will help move heat away from your engine so that is considered a reliability modification. Yea the mid pipe on stock fuel is a no-no

Its a case by case situation. The downpipe was my first mod and yes it caused massive creep. I would hit the fuel cut everytime I opened it up in 3 or 4 gear. I was lucky not to blow my motor. Easy fix though, just search for manual boost controller and you shouldn't have a problem. As for the mid pipe, I would leave that out for sure, mid pipes are great but they cause real creep. A manual boost controller probably wont be able to control the boost if you have a mid pipe. For that you would need to port your wastegate (major work).

Sorry, downpipes don't cause boost creep.

Thanks for not posting too much

i wouldnt drive your car in the snow. buy a beater for that becuase if i worked for 5 years for something, i would not want to slip and run in to something, or have someone slip and run in to me... in anycase, congrads on the new car and have fun with it when its dry. take it to a few track/open parkinglots to find out how much grip you actually have and how spin/slip happy fd's can be... (low weight+hp=hard to control at the limit)

Goodluck man. I'm actually buying a RX-7 tomorrow. I've watched my dad get his share of sports cars, and to add to the list that he has just purchased a NSX. I'm looking forward to driving both the cars.
