Just bought an FD!
Hey guys. I just bought a 94 Touring with 102K on the clock for a daily. I figured a caged and slammed FC drift car wasn't the best daily I could find. The car runs great and pulls hard. I was kind of worried about the high mileage but I guess time will tell how it will do. Anyway, the only issue with it I have found (just got it today) is that when in gear it idle surges about 500 rpms or so. When it is in neutral it idles smooth as silk though. Also, it tends to buck a little at low speed. I'm thinking maybe TPS. Anyone have any ideas?

Watch your coolant levels and at temp when idle goes down see if it smokes. Might be coolant seals and might need a rebuild. Waiting for input from one of the more experienced though.

Nah guys Ive been around rotarys to know what blown coolant seals do and this one seems good. It does it whether its cold or at OT. And Im vey convinced this had the original engine. It is 100% stock and some of the **** under the hood doesnt look like its been touched since it was put there. Im already itching to pull off the UIM and throttle body and polish them up.
On the plugs I had the same idea. Im going to get plugs and a fuel filter from work tomorrow. Maybe a new air filter too. Gotta love that massive air box

Your surging idle is probably the clutch switch. Do some digging, if that is it you can actually fix it with a spring out of a click pen, no foolin'.
Have fun with the new car!

man... I wish you the best of luck and hope nothing bad happens to the motor. I hate being the guy to say this or that, but not many original motors last much longer than 100k. If I were you, I'd just save for a either a nice rebuilt shortblock from either crispy, Mr. coleman or someone you trust.. or a rebuild kit if you know how to do everything on your own. I'm sure your no novice if you've been sliding that Tii around. But just saying I would love to dd a fd if I could. Unfortunately.. i'm just not there yet.

Keep the boost and power levels reasonable and you can get more miles out of the engine..... I've heard of an original FD engine going as high as 160k miles. Also make sure to flush the coolant annually, hopefully the previous owners did something similar.
You're in PA, not too far from the IRP shop..... if you ever need anything feel free to PM me

Im planning on running stock boost and everything. I'd like to get an exhaust and get some sort of intake to clean up the engine bay but for the most part I'd like to keep this stock as it is my DD. I already have a street ported FC so thats my toy to do those sorts of things with.
If my money situation is right this winter I want rebuild this just so its fresh. If it doesn't need anything besides new seals and such then hell yeah but if I need a new rotor housing or something no biggie. Its no thing new to me.
Just an update on the idle surge thing: DaleClark said about the clutch switch. I don't know if that would be it because when in neutral I can depress the clutch and nothing changes. It only does it when I put it into gear. On top of that, sometimes if I sit just holding the clutch in at idle for long enough it will smooth out and idle fine. This is a really weird one.
Lastly, IRP Shop? Ive never heard of this. I've been out to KDR now Speed 1. As a matter of fact, my friends FC is there now. Where is IRP located?

Anyone have any thoughts about this yet? Is there some sort of wiring going to the trans harness that may be at fault? I wouldn't think that theres any vacuum things related to the transmission that are only actuated when it is in gear?

Clutch switch, mine was doing that also when I first bought mine. Where the idle surges or bounces with clutch pressed...replaced it and was good again. Also a side not my car has 122***miles, running 15psi(with appropriate mods) and it's still running strong but I do plan to rebuild and street-port when the motor fails.

if not, tps adjustments

if not, idle adjustments

good luck.

I read through that thread. Im not trying to ignore anyone's advice but it doesn't seem like I have the same symptoms as that. But tonight I will go about that procedure and see if it fixes the problem. I will be sure to post up my results.
Thanks for the help fellas!

Does this car have a stock clutch and flywheel? Lightweight flywheel and more aggressive clutch can affect idle on deceleration.
Also, idle adjustment isn't really the same procedure between the stock ECU & PFC or other standalone. The stock ECU requires you to put it into diagnostic mode and mess with the air adjusting screw. PFC is a little different and sometimes more complicated.

I also was doubting the clutch switch because whilst in neutral with the clutch pushed in it idles perfectly fine. It is only when the clutch is pushed in and it is in gear that it doesn't idle correctly.
I am, however going to explore the clutch switch just to see if mine is in proper working order or not.

I found another thread on here via google. not the search function. haha. anyway, it was a fellow who had the same issue as me. Turns out the switch fix fixed it. Until I read that other thread I had no idea how the clutch switch was related to idle. But thanks for the help guys. Its much appreciated!. Now all I need is a drivers side exterior door handle and a sunroof switch. Im having zero luck finding either one anywhere except mazdatrix and they want $225!!!
