Just bought downpipe, JetHot quote $180?

Is this a typical price? I bought a new in box Pettit downpipe off the forums, e-mailed Jet Hot to get a quote on the 2000 finish. Told me 180$ + shipping which is basically what I paid for the downpipe.

I know Jet Hot is good, well, popular among forum vets atleast---but pettit can cerama-chrome it for 75 bucks...

is it worth it?? should I just go with a ceramachrome from pettit (or some other source)?

Thank you

You could get a few more quotes.

I've used Calico Coatings in Denver, NC with great results
Ceramic coatings, Teflon coatings, Thermal coatings solutions | Calico Coatings

And paid I think $250 for 2 lsx headers, which each are more involved than one rx7 downpipe.

So far we're talking about largely aesthetic coatings. I think you'd do better to wrap it. Unless you want to bling out a downpipe you really can't see once installed.

I had mine ceramic coated flat black locally for $60. That's blasted and coated inside and out. The place I used for my DP recently stopped doing thermal coatings but I just got my UIM ceramic coated, which is significantly more difficult, by another shop in town for $80. Both shops use a 2000 degree ceramic coating. The Jet-Hott sounds like a brand name price bump.

From the threads I've read on Jet Hot it seems to be more reliability/heat than aesthetic

Thank you all for the input. I am waiting on IRPerformance to give me a quote on their Hi Temp satin coating

A roll of DEI header wrap, a can of their spray hi-temp sealant and two good stainless steel worm clamps will run about $65 and take you less than an hour counting drying time. Not as pretty, but effective. Mine's been on for years. And in the time it takes to run it up on the lift after hard run I can grab the dp with my bare hands. Had enough left over to do the inlet and outlet of my cat to further reduce radiant to the tunnel and transmission.

It shouldn't be more than 60-80.

that is not a bad idea, especially if you have FIRST HAND experience

get it? cuz...u used your hands...to grab it.

this may be the best option considering how invisible the DP is in most settings.

I did not want to take this thread there but...are there any big disadvantages (barring aesthetics) to wraps over coats?

I do ceramic coating and that's a pretty good price. Honestly you get what you pay for when it comes to ceramic coating. The real work is done in prepping the parts via media blasting. I would advise against ceramachrome for a downpipe as egt's will surpass the coatings capabilities and brown it.

I would suggest just wrapping the downpipe as it will be more effective. I only have our downpipe on our racecar ceramic coated as we only charge ourselves labor costs obviously...

The only disadvantage to wraps is if they become saturated with oil or something that can catch fire. However, I don't think it is a good enough reason to not use wraps.

give these guys a look over.

http://www.tiradocustomcoatings.com/

They're based in San Antonio, Texas and are known all over the state for doing quality work (they had so much work, they even had to deny performing any new work for 2 weeks due to a huge project and existing work).

Coatings may LOOK aesthetic, because they do look good in black, chrome, gold, green, purple etc etc.... but every place that offers such coatings will undoubtedly have heat management coatings as well.

Sealing it helps alot. And also keeps it from being 'itchy' if you work next to it.

I've not found a coating that does much for radiant heat, hear good things about swain tech, though.

I seem to remember someone had rotor faces coated with Swain Tech. At the time I thought 'what a great idea'. I don't remember hearing how it worked out though.

Check out ceramic supplier Cerakote, they have tons of testing and technical data you can check out before you choose a coating then search for a trained applicator/shop near you from their site.

Cerakote Coatings

http://www.cerakotehightemp.com/testing/

Personally on my race car, I'm coating intake manifolds, turbine housing, turbo manifold and the whole exhaust but will also use heat shielding which I think is necessary. On my previous set-up I had A-spec ceramic coat my turbo manifold and DP but I also wrapped downpipe and added a heat shield with DEI gold foil on one side and it would make a difference of at least 300F+ between intake side and turbo manifold side.

Thanks everyone for the input, hopefully this will be good resource for others too.

I ended up going with IRPerformance's people out in TX--high temp black satin ceramic coating 125$.
