JDM parking (backup) sensor?

This is a new one on me. There's a JDM backup parking sensor - I'm guessing it's one that beeps as you get closer to another object.

The attached pictures are from an Ebay auction for a RHD center console. You can clearly see the switch and on the opposite side see the plug for it - it's definitely OEM.

Does anyone know anything about this one? Pretty neat!

I thought I was up on all the various OEM options and JDM differences, but this is a new one on me.

BTW, you'll have to look close in the pic, it's a little dark. The center button has a picture of the back of a car with "radar waves" going from it.

Hard to see in the pic, but if it's not stock, it's a DAMN good aftermarket job. The plug for it underneath is exactly like other Mazda OEM plugs.

Really wonder what the rest of the system looks like.

Indeed

Did any other Mazda cars use the same style switches was my first though?

Not to my knowledge. At least in US cars.

This might have been one of those dealer-installed options. I'll have to have a look through all my JDM dealer literature again and see what I find.

I have some constant bling-bling-bling noise everytime I put the car on reverse. Is this some funny japanese way to inform me that I'm going backwards, or might that be any misfunctioning parking sensor?

I have that too, in my 92 JDM. However, mine used to be an auto, and alot of autos from Japan have a reversing buzzer, so I think its just a leftover from the auto->manual conversion.

I think just general beeping when you put it in reverse is a simple backup beeper. There are many of these aftermarket - they plug into the reverse wiring so when the reverse lights are on you get the beeper.

If this is what I think it is, there's a "sonar" sender/receiver hidden in the rear bumper. As the bumper gets close to something, it starts to slowly beep, as you get even closer, the beeping increases in speed. My minivan has this as do many modern cars.

I guess it could be possible the button is for a backup beeper and not a parking sensor. If we can find someone with a JDM car who has this button that would answer the question .

I would have thought that it would come on with the selection of the reverse gear, rather than pushing a button. Seems odd to do it any other way to me.

I cant say I've seen a car with that switch, but I will keep an eye out

I have a sensor circle on the passenger side and its real its operation is real intermittent. any one know a good way of testing this ? (other than driving close to a wall.)

Old thread I know, but I think it was a option on the type x, there is a little box that sits on top of the door card by the triangle trim with a coloured line of led lights, One sensor on the rear bumper and one on the front iirc, my buddy has a couple of warning led boxes, will get a pic. The switch and sensors are ok. But the led box is well out of place IMHO .

We had that on some of the cars we imported to Australia from Japan. Its a crude PDC system, as described above (Park Distance Control) that uses microwaves bouncing off nearby objects to a sensor in the rear bumper of the car. As you back up closer and closer to an object, the beep---beep---beep increases to beepbeepbeep and the beeps get more frantic and closer together in rhythm until BANG. You hit the object...

If you remove the rear bumper skin and look at the chassis, there is an unused bendy clip loom holder somewhere that is used for the wiring. Its left unused on most cars. IIRC (and its been 5 or 6 years since I saw it, so my memory is fuzzy) it was only the JDM market cars with the sunroof, leather seats, R2 softer suspension, cruise control and Bose wave system that could have it (Type X Touring?) They were the luxury orientated models, and were more "plush" than the bare-bones R1 cars, which had no sunroof or other extras.

interesting. first I've heard of it as well. I have some brochures for japanese FD's throughout the years... I'll take a peek. good eye! Throw this in the mix with the headlight leveling switch, rear fogs, and headlight washers

I think thats because yours is an RS. My guess is that mostly luxury models (Type X, R2) would have had them fitted. You could probably order it on an RS or RZ by special dealer order, but I guess most people that wanted an RS or RZ wanted the car for sports use, and didnt bother with all the creature comforts extras..

Very easy, have someone wave their hand at the sensor. As the beeping sound beeps quicker, you are closer to the object. In this case, if the person place the hand slowly closing into the sensor, the beeping would be more constant.
