I know this has been discussed many time and I have put the RX-7 on jack stands many times but it's been about a year and I'm 2nd guessing the way it looks. I'm sure I did it as the FSM says. I have always wished they were spread out more. I'm sure I'm worried about nothing. I have the car on stands and they just look too close together, but I've got each as far back or front as I think possible. I know the rear stands are supposed to be in front of the rear wheels, near the crimp welds. The fronts are supposed to be on the frame rails or behind the front wheels, similar to the rear. I have the fronts on the frame rails, not behind the front wheel.

I prefer to use the subframe as the support in the rear and the frame rails for the front when putting on a lift. However when putting on jackstands I use the subframe in the front also, near the lower control arms.

I've used this setup for a few years - everything but the motor has been taken off and put back on the car using jackstand and 2x4's

The 2x4's at the back have been notched to fit around some bolts.

Cool, I know which bolts you are talking about towards the rear. Its just seems like a lot of overhang on the front and rear which is what I was concerned about. Obviously it's nothing to worry about. Thanks for the photo.

Slide a couple wheels under right below the door if you have some sitting arond.

I always get worried about something happening- someone opening the car door, getting in it, etc while its on the stands. I've seen one fall off before. Thats why its a good idea to put wheels (preferably with tires on them) slid under the car in addition to jack stands.

If something should happen, the car will come to a rest on the wheels, and not hard on the ground or on you.

Once you have the car on the stands, give it a good shove/bump to make sure it's stable. If it doesn't budge, you are good to go. Better to have it fall off the stands from a shove than when you are working.

The rear sub-frame points that Banzai showed on the lift seem like a good spot because they are further toward the rear of the car. I'll put the wheels and tires that I removed under the car and give it a good few shoves to makes sure it's stable. I'm sure it's fine and won't budge but a good idea nonetheless.

I always do the "wheels under the car" trick.
Sometimes if I have the stands on the car I will also leave the Hydraulic floor jack on the car too,just barely have the pressure off of it,,just for safety sake.
You can't be too careful.
You can't fight a 3000 pound car on top of you.It will win.

Put a jack under the control arm of one end of the car and see how much the spring compresses before the car moves. This is more stable than you think.

Re the bolts - there are bolt heads just in front of where the rear mudflaps attach. The 2x4s are made to fit around the bolts and other hardware.

I like the 2x4s' as it spreads the weight out a bit more than just the top of the stands.
