J-Spec RX7 engines???

Is swapping in a J-Spec a common thing the RX7 world? I have swapped an MR2 j-spec engines and it was more or less plug and play (we put a turbo into an NA so it was not plug and play when it came to te electrical). So do people put inj-spec engines or just do a single turbo instead? Thanks for your help.

BlazinDeuce: There is little advantage in getting a 13B-REW from Japan as compared to rebuilding or buying a reman. I believe in 96 they made some very small changes to the apex seals and oil feed lines. Other than that, the only big change was the redesign of the Hitachi turbos in 99.

For what is would probably cost you to get a J-spec engine here, you could probably get yours totally rebuilt.

Sorry about that, here is my questions

1. Are J-Spec swaps common in the RX7 world, or do people stick with the america engines.

2. Do most twin turbo applications convert to the single turbo or is that an expert modification?

Dont_Be_A_Rikki,

J-Spec = japanese specifications
I was talking about Japanese engines.

JDM is another term for it
JDM = Japanese Domestic Market

weren't all the rx7's imported into the US from Japan anyways? wouldn't that make all rx7 engines "j-spec"...

i really don't know..

Exclamation Whoooh!

Lay off the newbie Bust. Hes just asking Q's. That, and reading, is how we further our education.
We dont want to scare off future brethren.
No flame, just seemed to me that you kinda' jumped down his throat.
Though Newbie does need to read the replies to his posts.
Peace, Sphinx.

bust,
1. you need to read the post too.... Dont_Be_A_Rikki wrote "J-Spec = ?". Im guessing that means he did not know what it means.
2. Rynberg wrote his post the same time I was writing my second, that is why it looks like I asked my questions again before I read his.
3. I dont know what experience you have with cars and engines but no, just because the car is japanese does not mean the engine they put in it was the same one they put in the JDM's.

BlazinDeuce,

I don't know this for fact, but I believe there are really no differences (at least not in performance) between the engines that where shipped here into the US verses the ones used in Japan for the FD3S. I believe the differences are outside the engine area (Efini Y-Pipe, ECU, Turbos, etc..).

Jspec Motor

Jspec motor differs from USDM Rx7 motor:

1) Doesn't have fast idle solenoid on the upper intake manifold.

2) Lower intake manifold doesn't have the 2ndary EGR valve.

Other than that everything is the same as the USDM.

They did change things in the later years. Engine is the same, but other things are different. I think in '96 or '99 they use a different turbo which pumped out 280hp instead of 265hp. Some electronics were changed too. The ecu is different in '96 and in '99. That is why they have 3 different harness available. Lots of minor thing really. In '99, they have a better cooling system. I'm thinking about doing the swap, only because my engine is in the early stage of coolant seal going bad and my stock turbo is shot. I'm getting the total package for a very good price. Probably same price as an engine rebuild, but without a turbo and I need new turbos otherwise I'd get an engine rebuild. If I'm lucky, I might be able to get the Recaro seats for cheap. It's from the '99 model, so I'll be running 280hp stock.
