My friend was wondering how you could import a J-spec FD over here. Does anyone know a company like motorx or anyone? Also about how much would it cost? Under $40,000?

 

its not worth it. it is outrageously expensive to import a car less than 25 years old to the US. dont try it!

 

JESUS! A fully loaded 1994 RX-7 was $40,000 when they first came out. How do you expect to do this? You'll need alot more money to import one.

 

My brother had a company import a used 95' Ford Escort Cosworth from Germany a few years ago. It costed him about $10K over the price of the car. I'm not sure if the company is still doing stuff like that.

Or if you have a relative in the military. All military personel have to do is purchase the car in full in Japan, and they get it shipped back duty free. all the car has to pass is the inspection back for illegal arms, etc.

Thats the easiest way to do it, and all you have to do is pay the price. The best part, in Japan, they have this regulation, that once their cars pass 30,000 km, they have to sell the car, or they will be taxed heavily on emissions and what not. You can get a very nice (most, if not all, are upgraded with the usual intake, exhaust, and body kit) FD, BCNR33, Supra, and what not, for roughly 15-20k. Once im finished with college, thats what i plan on doing.

Hey Rex, im curious as to what you meant by your post. Are you reffering to the Japanese Emissions law in regards to the 30,000km's (or 40k)? If it is, i suggest you do a little bit of research before you say something, which would make others think much less of your intelligence, or misslead someone into thinking its false info.

I dont know you at all, and have never joked with you, so im curious what you meant by that comment. . . . If it was a harmless comment, then just let oh well, i dont mind then.

Of course, i could just be more irate bc some old lady in an SUV hit my front left fender on my way back from hot import nights. . .

 

I guess you missed the thread about the guy in FL selling the 1996 FD w/all the necessary papers. He also had some interesting comments dispelling the 'ourageous costs' rumors. Its worth scrolling down a bit to read.

 

I don't know why you would want to do that when the J-spec FDs aren't really all that much better than the ones we already have. Plus their Ecus are different than ours, and their engines are optimized to run on higher octane that what is readily available.

 

No, gas is rated differently in Japan so you can't make a straight comparison. Japan gas is rated solely on the Ron standard which is why it "appears" to be higher octane. 98 Ron is not as good as 92 Mon on a simplified basis(US standards are based on a combination of both standards)

There's LOTS of reasons to want a newer FD(esp. '99-on RS)

-better turbos(less lag/more power)
-no boost problems w/simplified sequential setup
-proper cooling(larger radiator w/improved ducting)
-larger oil coolers w/increased ducting
-larger brake rotors
-improved looks/aerodynamics
-improved 16-bit ECU
-larger wheels/tires
-LOTS of misc. bugs worked out
-etc.

Whats not to like about an FD with all the bugs worked out, performance improvements across the spectrum, and thats NEW compared to all the 8-year old FD's running around? Not to mention some of the special models like the '99 RZ or 2001 Bathurst R...

 

You might want to investigate importing from the UK.

You can get a delivery mileage 2001 Type-RB 3rd gen for about 28,000 GBP. That's on the road price.

I import Japanese cars into the UK from Japan, and i have never heard of this 30,000km rule !
They DO have a test called a 'shaken' which is taken every 3 years, and as the cost is prohibitivly expensive (in the region of 1200GBP or $1700), cars are usually sold or exchanged then.

As a reference you can pick up a '93 R1 in Japan for about 600,000 yen (or $4800) right now, with usually less than 50000 miles on.
