My car was parked under the carport (as was a neighbor's) when a city garbage truck backed into the carport and collapsed it on top of the cars. Considering the circumstances the damage could have been much worse but the roof just over the passenger door of my car is buckled pretty badly.

The garbage truck backed into the roof of the carport which buckled the legs of the structure. It then folded back until the legs strucks my car, ripped out of the ground and then the roof collapsed on top of it. The city brought in a crane, a front end loader and a large forklift to raise the carport while also trying not to damage the cars any further.

Suprising to my neighbors I did not assault the garbage truck driver or turn into a raging lunatic. I'm still just stunned. That driver has pulled in here hundreds of times and this time backs into the friggin carport; it's nuts. A few years ago my car was parked in front of the house and was hit and run. The entire left side had to be repaired. Now the roof too. Crazy.

I should have pics from the insurance adjustor for the city within the next day or two. I don't know how much the repair will be but it seems to me it will be expensive since the roof structure itself is bent. I don't think it bad enough to be a complete loss but it won't be easy to fix I'm sure.

If I had left for work 5 minutes earlier my car wouldn't have been there. Actually I wasn't even supposed to be home with the car. I was supposed to be racing in Houston but I cancelled that trip a week ago because we're buying a house and I decided not to spend the money. This is ridiculous.

If you consider yourself lucky in general, think this.Maybe the truck driver "stopped" you from having a terrible accident while you were driving to work.

My understanding is the city has their own liability insurance for things like this. It was a city vehicle that destroyed the carport and damaged my car so I should be hearing from their insurance company. I called my insurance company to let them know about the accident but since I'm not at fault and the city is fully responsible I shouldn't have to do anything but take my car in to get it repaired. We'll see.

I could always file a claim with my own insurance but then I'd have to cover the deductable. This should be completely taken care of by the city's insurance.

It's the clutch (or what's left of it), it's toast.

I don't think my wife will let me put another car on jack stands in the garage considering the current state of my FD. So, this one I'll have to eat the dealership costs.

There's another certain dealership that's getting a nasty-gram today I can guarantee you that!

Bew prepared to fight the insurance compan(ies), they'll try to total it with a low-ball offer. If there's any framer damage, and it sounds like there is, they will try to total it, even if it doesn'yt look bad.

Sorry to hear it, man.

Make sure you get enough for it so you can take it to a reputable shop to get it fixed. Dont let them screw you out of the money that you more than deserve.

Damon, wow...I'm really really sorry. Definitely don't claim this on your own policy because too many claims = eventual insurance premium hike. It's the city's fault, let them take care of it.

Usually when government is involved, they settle quite well, because they don't want to be sued. You never know...they might hook you up w/ a nice check, rental reimbursement in the meantime, and fix the carport nicer than before. I know it's tough to try and look on the bright side now, but rest assured there IS a bright side. For all you know, if you left to work on time, it could have been you and the car that the trucker hit, not the carport..and being so low, that would NOT have been pretty.

I'm w/ Peter and the others, make sure you take it to a good body shop that you know who can properly estimate the damage, and give you an accurate repair cost. I don't see how it could be a total loss...it's worth at least $10K by KBB or NADA (which is crap, yes, but still). It'll never cost that much to repair the car. They may want to just pay you for the car, but it's always your right to have it repaired instead if you argue hard enough (been there).

Again, sorry to hear about this incident...hope it works out for the best.

Oh man....sorry to hear that!

I know how bad I felt when I dropped a friggin' 2 X 4 on my roof! And the roofline of an FD is pretty damned non-conventional, what with the 'double-bubble' shape and all.

I hope you get it fixed better than new and soon.

You should get together with the owners of the other damaged vehicles and sue the city for damages .

If they get their money, there's no reason too. It would end up costing him a pretty penny to hire a lawyer and alot of hassle. I hate how people just think sue sue sue.

I'm late to the thread - man, that sucks Damon! Makes me glad my car is in a garage far away from the garbage man!

Good luck getting her on the road soon!

Oh jesus! That really sucks man. Is your car lowered, or is it so low due to the weight of the car port?
