Intercooler questions

I really want to upgrade my IC. I purchased a used Greddy FM, but the amount of work required for a FMIC is ridiculous, so I started looking at SMIC's and now V-mount. Are the xspower and Godspeed units any good? They cost like 1/5 of what a lot of the more popular units do. Any reason I couldn't take this Greddy FMIC and use it as a V-mount?

I cant speak for xspower but the Godspeed are not bad...I mean you can get better but its hard to.beat for.that price. To use the greddy for a v mount you might want to have.the inlet outlet moved to face the firewall to make the piping shorter.

There are already a ton of threads on this subject and it has kind of been beaten to death.

You should try searching for godspeed or xspower - I'm sure you'll find a lot of info.

Also search for cxracing if you're looking for a good/cheap intercooler that you could use in a custom setup. I used one from cxracing and i have no complaints.

Keep in mind any intercooler setup (SMIC/v-mount/front-mount) is going to require proper ducting in order to work the way it should. I've seen a few cars with xspower "kits" installed that have absolutely no ducting and probably function worse than the tiny stock intercooler.

Hands down the easiest IC to install is a stock mount. Front mount is way more difficult, and a v-mount even more so.

Keep an eye on the classifieds for a good used stock mount with a duct. I picked up a nice Pettit stock mount with duct for $450 recently.

And, as Theorie stated, a stock mount with no duct is WORSE than a stock IC. If you're going to do it, do it right.

If I could re-wind to '09, my cheap *** would have ponied up for a proper v-mount with custom angles.
In my mind, doing HPDE's with my excellently ducted Trust SMIC is the only reason I overheated my beast.

^ Why was it the intercoolers fault?

I would think that with a stock mount IC the radiator is more to blame.

I love it when I get good, straight-forward answers...Thanks Dale (again). Sounds like SMIC is the way for me. My car has never been on the track, and I have no plans to ever take it there, so stock mount should be plenty adequate for my uses. I will definitely fabrcate teh proper ducting regardless of what I use. Also, somewhere down the road I do see some type of water/alcohol injection. After all the good things I've read about it I figure it's a worthwhile investment.

Tried that...found tons of stuff on Godspeed radiators, some FMIC & coilovers, but nothing on Godspeed or xspower SMIC's.

A vote for PFS. IIRC not quite as big as Pettit but slightly larger than Greddy and some others. IMHO about the easiest fit and comes with an excellent fitting and sturdy duct. The 'kit' will include an intake which was the biggest negative for me since as designed it scavanges some air from the duct. But I modified mine ala "cheap-bastard" to mitigate that. It will also fit with open intakes and M2 and SRMotorsports style box CAIs as well. IATs have been more than satisfactory.
I've since combined it with post-IC and IAT/pre-throttle-body AI and have no plans to change.
