intercooler choices

hey guys i'm new and i'm planning on getting a 3rd gen rx7 in the next year or sooner and i'm one to plan ahead, so my question was after the some reliablity mods (downpipe, highflow cat, catback, ect.) i was thinking that the intercooler would be next and this is where i got stuck right now i want approximately 280-300rwhp and no matter what since i'm upgrading the intercooler i'm gonna have to get the fuel system played with (Apex Power FC and commander). but my question is that i'm looking at going with an m2 intercooler medium size but then thinking about it i might want to upgrade the turbo, maybe t78, down the line. so will that m2 intercooler be good enough or instead of getting it should i just get a greddy 3 row intercooler, cause i don't want to have to get a m2 intercooler then have to buy a greddy one, but then if i don't upgrade the turbo will the greddy intercooler be overkill?

thanks for your help. happy rotaring

And M2 medium will work with a single turbo for that HP and more. Check out Max Coopers site, http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/my_car/index.html

I don't know if this is really representative of its performance since the air temp sensor is so slow to react, but here are my average temps for each cell on the PowerFC fuel map from a recent datalogging session running the M2 Medium on the street. The max temp was 41C for the whole logging session. I have a fan, but it was not on during the logging. The fan is useful for dyno tuning, where my air temps stayed around 50C max with the fan on, and would go higher without it.

my two cents...the IC plans and questions are great but you mentioned a full exhuast upgrade. All this free flowing air is gonna build up some where ( we want it to be in the combustion chamber going boom). Make sure you get a boost controller at the same time, gonna boost spike and you could eat the engine first time you light it up

if you drag, go front mount. i prefer Angle mount intercoolers that don't block no radiator when you are hot lappin in summer. Angle mount IC with Race radiator from Knightsport is think around 3000, better start savin

GReddy Type 32 V-spec (aka 3-row) is a thicker core than the Apexi GT spec (which is the same thickness as the Type 24 V-spec, aka 2-row GReddy FMIC).

If you're going T78, I highly recommend the GReddy Type 32 V-spec FMIC; huge core, and efficient up to at least 1.2 Bar (17.4 psi).

BTW, I do open lapping events, and I chose a GReddy Type 24 V-spec FMIC. It's a much better setup than SMIC for maximum air intake charge cooling. You need to educate yourself on how to keep the 13B REW cool with an FMIC for maximum reliability. My peak water temp is 87 C, with temps averaging @ 85 C.

BTW, Max's SMIC setup with IC fans is the way to go if you do SMIC. Those air intake temps are pretty good for an SMIC.

FWIW my intake air temps (GReddy 2-row FMIC) peak @ 38 C around town, but drops down to ambient on the interstate! The only fans I have are the rad fans.

Okay, SleepR1, no more starting paragraphs with abbreviations that contain Ws.

My datalogging runs was me on the highway doing lots of 50-110 blasts in third and fourth gear, and a bunch of lugging the car in 5th gear under full boost. I was doing the binary throttle thing most of the time -- no throttle or WOT with little in between. I would expect the temps to be lower if I was just cruising. I might try some more runs with the fan on to see if it makes any difference.

It is hard to tell the real air temps, since the sensor is so slow to react and seems to measure the temp of the intake manifold as much as anything else.
