intake manifold

There is a connector on the bottom of the upper intake manifold. You can reach it while the manifold is attached from the back of the manifold, meaning the side towards the back of the car. What is it? What does it do and where can i get a new one?? Thanx for your help.

I'm pretty sure you are talking about the intake air temp sensor.

Errr, that's going to be a tough one. I don't know if Mazda sells just the connectors, and I don't think you'll find someone willing to cut the thing off if they were selling a harness.

You're best bet might be to use the GM air temp sensor (the one they use for Haltech). You can get that sensor and connector from K2RD.com. Then just tap your manifold or IC pipe (if you have an aftermarket IC), install the new sensor, and hook the new connector to your harness. Plus I'd bet the new sensor is more accurate than your old stock one.

Not really. Go to http://www.k2rd.com/Online_Catalog/Haltech/Haltech.htm buy the air temp sensor for $35, buy the air temp sensor connector for $4.

Now take off you upper manifold and remove the old sensor. It has a blue connector.

Take the manifold to a machine shop, or if you have the proper tools do it yourself, and tap the existing hole to 14mm x 1.5. Install new sensor.

Cut off old connector from harness. You will have to solder in a few inches of extra wire for the new connector. Install wires in new connector.

Replace manifold. Connect the new sensor. Voila! Brand new.

Should take anyone with the slightest mechanical and electrical inclination maybe two hours.

Could this air temp sensor not being connected be the reason for my choppy idle?

If your Intake air temperature sensor was not connected, your check engine light would be on and would be throwing out a Code 11 in the diagnostic mode.

GotBoostd has some good advice there.

Since it sounds like you snapped the wire, the best bet is to go with an upgraded intake air sensor like he mentioned.

Leave your old sensor in the UIM, or just plug the hole.

I dont think you need to redo the hole in the manifold... I believe you can tap the new intake temp sensor right into the intake elbow. After doing that, just find the snapped wire, get some wire connectors, insulation...and voila... you're finished

Yeah, under the manifold isn't the most ideal place for the air temp sensor to be mounted. It could get innaccurate readings from the engine heat produced right below it.

So genieman17, do you know for sure that the connector is broke? Doesn't sound like you know what the exact problem is yet.

The problem is that when i decided to replace the vacuum lines i took off the uim and i didnt know that wire was there and i just pulled it straight up....and it tore....the connector on the uim isnt broken....even the other connector isnt broken....but one of the metal pieces that slides into the connector broke off...i need a basic piece of metal for the connector from like a radio shack type place....i think that would do the trick....

oh! just pull out the temp sensor, and pop the metal connector back into the harness since you didnt tear the wire.
