Intake idea

I have an idea that I want to run past you guys. My goal would be lower the intake temperatures, and avoid breathing in hot engine bay heat.

I have a large SMIC and duct. Right now my two filters are sucking in hot air, and I do not think other box type intakes will fit with a large SMIC ( correct me if I am wrong ).

My idea was instead of using two filters, for the twins, was to use one larger filter. I could relocate the filter to inside the duct by cutting a hole in the side of it.

I understand this would obviously restrict the air flow against my intercooler for those several inches but I believe the over all difference would be positive.

To start, the car would be seeing ambient air temps. That has to be a 20-30 degree difference.

Besides the slight interference with the intercooler, and perhaps smaller surface area of one filter vs two can you think of any other negatives to this idea?

Get someone with a press brake to make you a nice little enclosure for a larger cone and snorkel air from the side/bottom of the I/C duct. That will be a more effective way of doing it without affecting other systems. Before you start hacking away or doing anything like this, I'd take temperature measurements as is. That way you'll be able to say "My intake temps changed by xx degrees" and you won't be second-guessing your endeavours.

i have a large custom smic. i use the M2 airbox with dual K&N filters. the smic is the same size as the pettit coolcharge III.

it has a duct-shield on the bottom that takes in cool air from the front bumper opening.

get yourself an M2 airbox and call it a day. if you can't find one, SR Motorsports makes a replica for $500.

Hey not to hi jack your post, but I am just curious have u ever dyno your car? I have pretty much the same setup like u except for the port work, and I just want to know how much power your car put down?

Thanks I didn't know a box style would fit.

I was going to get an thermometer and take the temps by the filter and where I had suggested. If they were significantly better then I might go ahead with the idea.
Another slight benefit besides cooler air is the air would be rammed in to do intercooler duct. I am sure that would be pretty negligible though.

I did get it on the dyno but ran in to problems before it was 100% done. The car was around 310 on a mustang dyno when we had to stop. I was told by several people that this particular dyno rates 18% lower than others in the area.

I do not remember what my intake temps were exactly but I remember feeling they were high considering the hood was up, and there was a large fan blowing on it.

Is there some sort of formula to say given a X degree lower intakes has this kind of effect on HP?

OP,

I have a setup similar to what you are describing; however, I am running a single turbo. Check out post #49 of this thread...

Unfortunately, I don't have any measurements on temp differences. I just like the fact that I know the turbo is getting cool air vice the hot engine bay air...

A slightly different approach. . You could easily take out the air box.
Draw back.. The filter gets dirty quicker, could be the desert dirt or just being to open.

FDAddicted's approach might be fine for the Southwest. But it also means you can't have dual oil coolers. And with exposure to the water, debris and the bugs in my area it wouldn't last long.

Yes I cant do the dual oil coolers, but I can upgrade the one oil cooler I have. My oil water temps are good for my area. (Thats why i decided to go with this)I don't track the car or get on it much in the Summer.
Like I said it gets dirty here quickly. Dust and bugs all day long. I'm surprised the filter looks clean in this old picture. Maybe some kind of shield on that side of the filter would help prevent it from getting dirty. Since you just looking for the outside air. Plenty of space to draw the air from in that area. Since I dont drive the car much, I dont mind cleaning my filter at low mileage.
