Cleaning rusty rotors.

The FD has been sitting for a long while now so the brake rotors are very rusty, I have searched but not come up with anything related so does anybody have any ideas how best to clean up the rotors or even if it's worth it.

cheers for the help guys.

IMO, unless the rust is severe enough to cause deep pitting in the rotors, they will clean up as you drive. However, I have cleaned rotors by hand with emery cloth or other abrasives to get most of the rust off. The one thing you don't want to do is to use a grinder/sanding wheel on them unless the rotors are rapidly rotating while you do it. You don't want to create dips in the surface - these would then require the rotors to be turned or replaced.

Ive left my car stood several times and the discs have rusted... i just remove them and sand the rust of they clean up quickly, or if you got cash you could throw new ones on.

Really no reason to sweat it. Rotors are cast iron, rust is what they do.

A few miles with some braking will completely clean them up. The brakes will sound "gravelly" at first until you get most of the rocks knocked off.

You could also have them turned at a local machine shop for about $30... although I read somewhere others have advised against this due to their thin construction. Your mileage may vary.

Rust on the face will come off by driving. If you are referring to rusty hub areas, that is a bitch to get off. That is why I like the Centric rotors. The hub part are coated in a rust resistant coating.

You can use a wire wheel brush, that will fit on a hand grinder.
Most hardware stores will carry these.
This will knock off the rust, and not harm the rotor.

Oh, and wear glasses, when doing this.

On this note, does anyone know what the minimum spec for the rotors is?

Front:
Original 22mm
Minimum 20mm

Rear:
Original 20mm
Minimum 18mm

It's in the service manual.

Thanks guys for all of the posts, because there is alot of rust I will whip them off and have a go with some sand paper (not too rough) or possibly a wire wheel, then go for a drive to get them extra smooth.

thanks again.
