Input Shaft?

From what I have searched it seem like my input shaft bearing may be gone, here is the symptom, when on idle there is a sound like when your brakes are gone, a grinding on off sound but when clutch is deppresed it dissapears, the sound is not as loud when the engine or tranny gets to its normal oprating temp.

Now here is the question, what will happen if I keep driving on it the way it is, I know that I should'nt but just wondering what could happen, not really feeling doing all this work at this point and want to hold off till the winter..

Also are there brand new transmission's available for sale...not sure if there is a shop here that can rebuild mine...

Thanks

Kai

Kai,

How old is the throw out bearing and pilot bearing? the tranny oil level good and new tranny oil?

Just checking the small stuff first which is what you seemed to have done since your already thinking its the input shaft.

Agreed sounds like a throw out bearing.

Not sure how old it is but I bought the car at 99,000 miles it now has 111,000, engine and clutch was replaced at 90,000 but not sure if they replaced the throw out bearing and pilot bearing, I would think that they probably did.

Car shifts fine no grinding, just that sound that it makes...Guess I may have to do a clutch job..Sucks>>>LOL..

What would happen if I kept driving it till the winter?

well mine has a whirling type of grinding sound (not bad and you don't feel it through the clutch petal but you do hear it) with it in neutral, press the clutch in and it goes away. I'm guessing that's what yours is doing? If so, I've had that noise for about 3 years now but then again mines just a weekend toy that I've put maybe 3 or 4K miles in those 3 years and mine hasn't gotten any worse from when I first noticed it. I would think you should be good through the summer.

If the noise goes away when the clutch is pressed in its the pilot bearing.

If the noise starts when the clutch is pressed in its the throwout bearing.

so then what about the input shaft bearing?

My tranny is messed up too...granted I ate a curb with the rear end a year ago. My tranny growls loud with rpms in neutral...if I roll forward a few inches the noise goes away..roll forward again it comes back....at a constant roll in first gear or reverse with clutch up the tranny sounds like a card in the spokes with the bearing noise coming and going.

Push the clutch in....after you make it halfway down, its gone completely. Come out halfway, hit the engagement and you can hear a growling bearing spin up to speed. So how is this pilot bearing and not input shaft or needle bearings??

I also have the whirling sound, but I don't think that its the sound he's describing.

Agree.

Changing the input shaft bearing is not difficult if you have the right pullers. Ditto with the pilot bearing. I would replace both.
