Info on McColloch HID setups
Because I love you guys so much (and b/c I want a set ) I've been researching this. Following is some email correspondence between myself and a McColloch rep. You'll have to read from the bottom up
btw, their website address is: www.mccullochhid.com/
If you check out the website, you'll see that the HID retrofits are *not* street legal (kinda like midpipes and downpipes ) but do come with a 1 yr warranty.
Enjoy!
<<Dear Rich,
The suggest retail is $549, however you would need to contact our dealer for the exact pricing. The McCulloch HID kit is 100% reversible because you are NOT required to cut/splice any wires. For inspection (if they don't ask you to pop your hood and examine the engine bay) take out your HID bulb, put the halogen back, unplug the power to the ballast and plug it to the halogen. You can see the ballast & igniter from our website which shows two open end: one end with two plugs that looked the same as the HID bulb, and the other end looked the same as the back of the halogen bulb which you plug into the power. That's it. You don't need to know much when installing our kit, just follow the pink instruction note we include and fill out the warranty card so if anything happens, you have something to rely on.

Thanks for the reply.
How much $ is the kit, and how easy is it (or is it possible at all) to switch back to my stock setup for inspections (I'm losing my lowbeams if I go the HID route).
thanks,
Rich

You loose your hi beams not your low. And you need to remember that the cause of the
poor lighting on a 3rd gen isn't the total fault of the bulb. The reflector and the lens has even
more to do with the equation. So just because you run a brighter bulb doesn't necessarily fix
the problem. That is why I converted the instruments as well as the bulbs.

I want better lighting as well.
Ebay has HID kit for sale too. Sometimes they're as low as $299. Just search "hid h4 kit".
The sleek light conversions kits are pretty expensive for my taste $800+ and that's without the HID's...

while i knoe the benefit of high beams are due to their angle and not their brightness, i almost thought it was a joke he said "losing low beams" because HIDs are that much better.
so bill b, are you saying that the HIDs won't help that much because of the badly designed light housing (reflectors)?
the kit sounds very easy to install and the price isn't that bad...maybe group buy? heh.

We're a McCullogh dealer. HAve yet to do our opening order so if you're interested please do contact us.
Automotive R & D
408-947-0505 office
San Jose, CA.
Also a dealer for MTC, the other really good HID company. They're the only two I would go with. They are hids4less.com.
Thanks, Rishie

What Bill B means is that even though you may have greater light output, the light may not neccesarily be directed where you want it. The bulb and the reflectors (and perhaps the lense) act as a system to direct light, and frankly - the lamp assembly on the FD SUCKS.
Its fine if you have only driven older cars a night, but once you've been behind the Xenon lamps of a Lexus GS400 or LS400, you realize how horrible the FD lamps are.
Can you say 'razor sharp cutoff'?

The kit is very easy to install/uninstall it is basically a new bulb you just need to mount the
ballast and ignitor. When it comes to HID a warranty isn't really a factor. Yes things break
that is a fact but as far as the bulbs go they will outlast a filament bulb 8-10 to 1 or about
9000 hours of use. Allot of the effect is that our eyes like 4900-5800 degree k. so the HID
upgrade also carries that appeal. The fact still remains that if you spread that light poorly it
really doesn't matter how good the bulbs are.

oh no, i agree the housings matter in how well lit the road will be, i just wanted to verify that the light housings on the FD are the major problem. i've used HID lights before and trust me, everything after it has been darkness. my old passat had the OEM hella HIDs and it was fantabulous. i was just wondering if it would still be a significant enough improvement to warrant them rather than some alternative headlights that were designed to accomodate HIDs...like HID projectors.
