Importing For Dummies

Hey everyone.. as of right now I cant decide if I am going to move to japan or if I am going to stay in the states. My question is.. if i were to get a 95 FD from japan.. how much of a hassle would it be to import it into japan. I have some hook ups there that can get me a 93 for about 4500 stock. Of course it goes up from there but.... I need too know what I would have to do to get that car into the states 100% LEGAL!!! I dont want any scams or ways around importing 100% legal. I have done alot of research on doing this but I could still benifit from someone else's knowledge. Importing companies... freight companies..everything... Im trying to get the best deal of course. So.. I know according to the importing guidlines by the US the 93 to 95 can be imported pretty easily. Anywayz if anyone has any info let me know please.

Nobody here has actually imported a 93-95. Try contacting customs as they will have the best answer.

Search function?

Anyways, you're not going to have it imported and legally registered because no one has/nor wants to setup USDM crash testing for 2 of them.

Track car only? Sure. Legally drivable on the street? No.

If you really want a Right hand drive FD buy one of those parts cars (or everything you will need) and put it into your car. Take the vin's off your car parts and put your old vin's on the new parts you are installing (namely the dash) and voila! Street legal RHD car, meeting all of the DOT requirements (since your car already does).

If you are serious about this, talk w/ an import/export company that specializes in dealing w/ vehicles OR talk w/ the various govt. agencies (customs, DOT, etc.). Essentially get the info directly from the source.

There are a lot of people on this forum w/ no real knowledge on this subject matter, and talk out of their a$$. (And to be honest, I don't think it can be done)

This topic has popped up way too many times on this forum and I'm fed up w/ seeing it over and over again.

im looking for a 95 not a 96+.. according to the website from the DOT http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...LIG102803.html
a 87-95 is elliegable to be imported... i know its going to be a little pricey..but i think it would be worth it have a RHD FD IMO. Like I said i have done alot of research..what im looking for now is if people have connections in the import industry that maybe i can contact about getting prices etc..

The RX-7, is for LHD vehicles. It does not specify that RHD vehicles are included as well.

its illegal to import a jspec car unless your a registered importer if you have the intention of selling the car. Once you import it and its legal and registered, you can not sell the car... from my understanding of the research ive done the title can not change names for any reason.. i may be incorrect but... i dont know.

Ok i somewhat looked into this......If i remember correctly theres 2 types of cars..one being a "like" model and the other being lets say a "not like" model

A not like model is a car like a skyline that has no car like it here in the states (thats why getting those in the country and on the road cost like 40gs)

A like model is car that is similiar to a car already here ie an FD. I think when i looked i found 5 people who import cars....You will have the car shipped in by container and the company doing the work (getting it state legal) will pick it up from the dock.......i think its roughly 6-10gs to do up a car.. it aint cheap but then if you look at it..getting a 93 fd with only 20k miles on it for 6 grand it is a great deal.....

first of all is it illigal to convirt a lhd fd to a rhd fd? no bashing of thread that is all the guys that have seen this thread before seem to do!

if so then why do the people that already haev a fd that just want to sit on the wrong side of the car by all the left over stuff from someone like myself that is realy just loking for cheap 7s or front clips with 20bs in them. this way we are all getting the best of the world. however, this only works for most if it is a legal swap cause everyone is scared of what?... getting pulled over adn sitting on the wrong side of the car. I did not know they could write tickets for that.

next has anyone shipped a car from japan to the staes or even a front clip. ( do not care if it was registered labled off road only whatever) if so was it as easy as importing a crate of "race car parts" or a race car disasembked in a crate. and how much did it cost roughly after importing tax and frieght.

common guys we need to do this and find some real answers so we can finaly show those people that keep bashing it that it can be done if you are willing to work around the obvious!

thanks and once again lets keep this thread alive and as fatual as we can.
