Little things I notice as I tear it down. I've found a couple of masking-tape marked electrical connectors and hoses, but more importantly on the driver's side there are paint-pen markings on the rotor housings indicating "F" and "R" for front and rear. Surely this is not the way it came from the factory?

Usually any writing on the block indicates a junkyard replacement or a rebuild...usually a rebuild. Further, any stampings in the top of the rotorhousings other than the standard F and R on top are rebuilds. IF you ever notice an anodized-looking red coating on the heads of bolts on the block, that's an older mazda reman...newer ones will have the blue tag on the front cover as well. Mazda usually paints their front covers with a chrome-like silver paint so that's another way to tell.
