I'm manufacturing a SMIC

I am having an SMIC made to be sold through illstreet in the upcoming months and I am very interested in hearing what everyone has to say about it. Suggestions, criticisms, etc are all welcome. I know a lot of people have their own idea about what makes the best intercooler. Please do not contact me to purchase it as I would not feel right about using rx7club commercially. I am just looking for ideas at the moment. Here is something what it will look like (subject to change):

Looks good, any comment on price yet?

Also, I think ducting is one of the biggest concerns in SMIC design; any pics of the duct out of the car?

Thumbs up

How big is the core? It would be nice if you could use a core similar to the size of the old Blitz SMIC (my old Blitz):

I could see you having something similar as I see a lot people still searching for them.

It looks very similar to the blitz, SR motorsports, and pettit's 'new style' CCII SMIC's. If you want to sell this thing, it should be cheaper and comparable to these, otherwise there really is no demand for it.

Target price is $400. This intercooler is a direct drop in replacement primarily for those that only autocross and don't want to extensively modify the car. You can use all of the stock stuff but the intercooler will be more efficient and thicker.

The stats are somewhat like this:

Length: 29cm
Height: 11.5cm
Width(Thickness): 7.5cm
Overall height: 31cm
The main difference in size over the stocker is the thickness and construction of the core and end tanks.

Cool, the dimensions resemble the ARC small SMIC.

$400 would be a real nice price for a good SMIC.

My buddy's dad custom made a SMIC with two DSM intercoolers welded together. The end tanks were cut off and the finished product looked a lot like yours, with the exception that it had a "cold pipe" with an HKS SS BOV welded on to it. I sold it to another member on this board. Also notice in the last pic he welded brackets to bolt down the AST.

I had actually compared it to the Greddy SMIC and that intercooler you see in my pics was much bigger believe it or not. It was thicker and wider.

Sorry if the pics don't load up, just right click and "show picture" or copy the url. Imagestation sucks.

Do you know what the pressure drop across the core will be like?

I'm in

I'd buy one for 400.00 at those specs. Please let us know what kind of ducting is included or not. I don't plan on making this car retarded fast, just would do this for reliability mods. I'm sure there are plenty of people here who would do it for the same reason. I have a full on racecar to put the big stuff on (sorry my track car isn't My 49k miles FD).

two suggestions:

1) test pressure drop on the road with a dwyer pressure drop gage. Compare with stock. Some core tubes are packed with fins and have high drop.

2) leave enough room on the back for a pair of thin spal fans:

come on when rads come on to avoid IC becoming a preheater.

Pressure drop is something that we've been considering since the purpose of the intercooler is to reduce temps without increasing pressure drop. The company manufacturing the intercooler has all of the necessary equipment to test the intercooler for performance since theyre one of very few companies that actually manufactures their own cores. The fan idea is something I didn't consider. It is a good idea and I will look into it.

^Exactly. Something that is bolt-on and hopefully uses the stock ducting.

I'll be moving into a medium SMIC and large SMIC after the stock-sized one is finished. Then I'll be doing an FMIC and v mount package. Funds were slow to be raised to support manufacture of the prototype and first production run. In response to the ducting comment; it will use the stock ducting.
