ignition ?s

I'd appreciate any links to ignition system basics. I've searched and read lots of hype and arguments on whether or not amplifiers work, which is best, blah blah., but really would like some links to help me research the subject myself, starting with ignition basics and working my way through the technical minutiae of the FD system and upgrades.

This research is in response to what seems to be ignition breakup at 6500 rpm running open exhaust, intake, pfc, ic, new plugs and wires. Car pulls strong through that range at ~12 psi, but held steady at 6k it stutters and smokes a bit...

Sorry, I'm sure there is a fantastic thread out there but my searches didn't turn it up.

Kent,

Did you get the PFC tuned? The stock ignition is actually pretty good (up to a point).

I have heard really good things about the HKS TwinPower.

Nope, but got the PFC from Fritz who had it tuned for a basically identical setup, (fwiw). I hesitate to spend a bunch on having the PFC tuned to my 80k mile motor, and as you know the car is running very strong otherwise at the moment... knock on wood

So basically I'd like to educate myself a bit re ignitions. I've learned a lot about our cars but ignition is an area I have not spent much time researching. C'mon linkmaster, hook me up!

Yeah, so have I, but I've also heard they're a waste of money and I'm not really interested in reopening that debate. I'd like to do the research to separate the facts from the hype.

I think it's more of a tuning issues. Keep in mind the while the setups may be identical, flow rates of the injectors at tuning time may not be... In that case, it can throw off the tuning if it's getting more fuel then it thinks or not as much as it thinks.

I would invest in a tune first. Without a tune on your car, your not much better than the rechipped ECU's that Pettit/M2 or the others offer.

As for the ignition amplifier, here's the one I'll be going with (FC1000 by Jacobs Electronics):

Hi Mahjik,

I see the same ignition amplifier sold at jegs for $140. You think its a better buy or there is a harness wire not included at this price?

Will you be changing your coil too? I am also wondering what would be a reasonable price coil to upgrade too...

Nope, that should be the same thing. I'm just getting mine from Rotary Performance as I have a few other parts I need to order from them (I don't want to pay shipping twice ).

I will be trying it with the stock coils. I've heard conflicting remarks on whether this amplifier will burn out the stock coils or not so I figured I would just try it. Some people usually go with the FC coils when changing. You should be able to find some decent FC coils (if you want to change) for a good price.

If you have a m2 or pettit ecu,get the twinpower.I have it, and it made a difference in power and mpgs.Worth the $$.

regarding the jacobs system
This is a true capacitive discharge system, not just a simple restrike system like the HKS Twin-Power.
would anyone care to elaborate on the above??
