If you were to sell your FD, what car would replace it?

Another FD?
I wouldnt want to trade my FD, instead I wish to own more of them.
My mini list of cars I aspire to own:
--------------------------------------------
00' Nissan 'R34' Skyline GT-R V-Spec (Silver + Black Interior)
98' Nissan 'R33' Skyline GT-R TommyKaira (Silver + Black Interior)
00' Mazda RX-7 RZ (White + SPARCO Seats)
93' Mazda RX-7 R1 (CYM + Black Interior)
93' Mazda RX-7 Touring (Silver + Red Interior)
98' Nissan 240sx /w RB26DETT swap (Black + Black Interior)
04' Subaru WRX STi (Blue + Gold Wheels)
61' Ferrari 250 GT California (Red + Tan Interior)

However, answering to your question
I would replace my FD with another sexy car like it
and I think the only one would compare is the Ford GT40
I mean the original GT40
but I can recognise it would not be that easy to drive it "daily" as the FD

If I were you I would go Z06. But also consider the LS1 swap if you want reliabilty without compermise of performance. That way you keep the 7 and it will only run you about $10k. I expect to get bashed for the comment but I am doing it and it was for the same reson you are considering selling.

The one issue i have with that is that its ANOTHER $10k into a car worth $15k maybe...where as i could have a newer car thats overall more reliable and sound (Z06, M coupe, etc). Ive been talking to a lot of the Bimmer guys, and quite a few owned FD's before their M Coupes, and havent looked back since the transition.....
Captain combo, the E46 M3 is based off of the 3 series, where the M Coupe has the exact same drivetrain in a Z3-hatchback platform.
I don't really have any plans of ever getting rid of my FD, but if I were to sell it right now, the only possible car I could think of to replace it with would be a Z06. Amazing car.
tough one here....
replace with:
- a race car
- Miata (drive one hard on track and you'll understand)
- Noble
- 20B FD
- Lotus Elise
- C6 Z06
I actually had a properly modded e36 BMW before my FD and hated it for track duty. Its OK on the street and for the occasional aggressive street driving, but too heavy, soft and mushy on track unless you go with a race suspension which at that point defeats the purpose of a car like the BMW on the street. I actually spent more in maintenance for the low mileage BMW than my FD.

If anyone owns the FD for the right reasons, the only logical "replacement" would be something of similiar power and nature (meaning lightweight and tossable).
Given that, I'd have to agree with alberta...something like an NSX, Lotus, Miata, racecar...etc. However, with all those in mind, I think the FD is the best, most beautiful and capable of many things...
FD is the best "road race car" this side of $100k I'd say. I'd like an NSX, Lotus next to my FD though
And the only thing I'd perhaps trade the FD for is a high end exotic...

I'm just curious as to why you're worried about replacing the drivetrain when it only has 40k miles on it.....there are many, many people here that are or made it well past the 80k mark.
Also, you would be foolish to think that there aren't expensive maintenance associated with 4-year old modified BMWs or Corvettes, either, for that matter.

Lotus Elise.
That's the only car that would tempt me that's close to the price range you've set, and it's something I've actually thought about. The 7 is a better long distance car though, which is one of the things that has held me back.
If money is no object, I'd go for the new Ford GT. And the '06 Z-06 is a great car, as others have mentioned. If you're a fan of that car, the Feb. issue of Motor Trend is a "must have." It's got a great cutaway photo of the car and lists all the engineering innovations. Gotta wonder about the engine though....seems they've stretched the displacement close to the breaking point.

There's a HELLuva lot of machinery that i'd be happy to push my car off a cliff for that are in between and FD and a Carrera GT.... that's one hell of an upgrade. What did you do? Win the lottery?
Realistically, i'd consider a Z06 or M3 as a replacement, but i really don't want a sports sedan or an american car... i'd probably hold out for a 911, even if its a basic N/A model, and even though it's slower. There's no way i'd consider an STi or Evo or anything like that as a replacement. They are downgrades as far as i'm concerned. The cheapest "upgrade" vehicle would probably be a used corvette. I'm also waiting to see how much Elises depreciate when they come up used.

Well, now that I'm a little bit older (owned my latest FD for 6 years), I'd probably look at cars with more than two seats. But since I own three cars and one is an SUV I'll put a couple of two seaters in there:
Porsche 911, (996) 1999 or newer
- Have had two 911s in the past. Without question my favorite car to date.
Porsche 991 (964) Turbo 1991-1992 and 3.6L 1993. Sometimes referred to as type 965.
- Came with 3.3 liter and 320 HP for 91 and 92 and a 3.6L in 1993 with 360 HP. Few of these around, but the 3.3L cars can be had for a bargain. Very easy to get 500+ HP from these cars. The 3.6s are even harder to find (only 1,400 produced) and a good bit more expensive.
Porsche 911 (996) Turbo, 1996+
- Probably can't talk the wife into anyting more than $70K at this time, though. Would most likely have to sell the BMW and FD to get this car in the garage.
Lotus Elise, US version (2 seats, but an awesome track tool with Toyota engine reliability)
- Downside is English wiring and components which have gotten less than favorable reviews
BMW M5 (E39, 2001-2004)
- Often swap cars with my co-worker (One of my other cars is a Bimmer...no flames) who has a 2002. Have put many miles on this car and I really like its power and versatility. NOT a fan of the Bangleized E60 M5 at all!
BMW M3 (E46)
- Nice all around car. Feels more nimble than the M5 and is a good bit less expensive. E36 M3 is a fun car too, but more of a lateral move, IMO.
Viper, GTS only. 1996 and newer.
- Not a good daily driver but an exotic that can be had for pretty low money. Better resale and image than Z06. Repalcement parts are expensive, i.e., the clamshell hood is over $10K.
MB E55 AMG, 2003+ What can I say? A 469 HP sleeper with 516 lb. ft of torque and a luxo-ride to boot.
My consider a C5 or C6 Z06. Hate the 'Vette stereotypical image though, particularly as I head toward age 40.
Also feel that the STi, Evo, and RX-8 is a step down, though they are all fun cars to drive. New Cobras are fast, but what? I've graduated from pony cars.
