Yes, you still need the air pump.

There is one of them (I think N-Tech) that says you don't, however I think they are full of crap.

You only need it if you plan on passing emissions

No, that's not necessarily true. There are other things that can cause you to fail emissions other than the air pump. However, you won't pass without it.

An air pump changes nothing in the emissions test as far as I have heard, but if they look under the hood and see you dont have an airpump they can refuse to pass you, some places are **** about it, others dont even really bother to look (although they are supposed to). I have a high flow cat and I just removed my airpump totally. You do not need to upgrade your airpump if you get a high flow cat (unless you really want to spend that money to please the government...).

The role of an airpump is to provide O2 in the cat to aid in chemical process of cleaning the emmisons. With a quality hiflow cat, an airpump is not neccesary, though rotarys are dirty and will likely be neccesary to pass emmisions. Not having an airpump with a hiflow cat does not neccesarily mean it will shorten the cats life significantly.

However, it is possible the stock (highly restrictive) cat or a low quality cat may clog deteriorate quickly w/o the airpump. A cat needs to get hot for it to work correctly, but it's reasonable that with a restrictive stock cat, TOO much heat can build up and cause problems.

There is no real conclusive evidence one way or another.

If you dont have an airpump then just get a midpipe and if that is too much flow then have a muffler shop weld in a muffler

An air pump will help extend the life of a HF cat..but not sure how long. I've been running without my airpump for 1.5 years now without problems - I got a quote "HF cat" off the net..ended up being gutted so it was basically a midpipe. I had a HF cat welded on but didn't have a hookup for the airpump..I'm sure in a few years it might cause problems..but if it did, I'll just get another one welded on for $150 from Meineke

Buy a used airpump. They're on here/ebay/thepartstrader quite often. You should get one from a midpipe convert for less than $100.

My car was dumping about 5X the legal limit at idle for, I dont remember if it was HC or NOx, until I discovered the air pump was not connected. Had a bung welded to the cat and fed the air pump into it, after that I passed with about 1/2 the limit of whichever the offending molecule.

I bought the N-tech hi flow cat. I ran the car for a month w/o the airpump and my car wouldn't idle at all and smelled aweful.

Once I connected the airpump, the car idled fine and stopped smelling foul.
