Assuming I know all the responsibilities and considering I have a 2nd gen , what would I say to my dad and friend when they tell me that its too high maintanance and this that and that I would be stupid for modding it?

Well, it is a hard car to defend on rational grounds (as is any high performance sports car), but it sure is a fun car to drive.

Tell them that it is your money (assuming that it is) and you have done the research (assuming that you have) to know what it takes, and that this is what you want to get. Take them with you when you go on a test drive, and they might end up wanting one, too.

not all mods are just for performance..there are reliability mods.

 

wait, what's your question - modding an FD or getting an FD (or getting and modding an FD)?

as far as modding - like martini said - a lot of the mods help reliability as much as they do performance...

as far as getting an FD - say they are right... your car is actually reliable and our car is actually not reliable (depending on your definition of reliable - which I like to define as "long lasting"). It is, however, a hoot to drive, and it forces you to learn about cars (because you want to at least have some idea about what is going wrong when it's not working properly & you have to take it in somewhere to get fixed).

 

How old are you? Unless you have money coming out your ears, I would not get an FD before the age of 25 or so.

It really sucks to have a great car and no money

Not all FDs turn into money pits, but you never know until after the fact, and in most cases you never learn how to care for one properly until you have leanred from experiance by doing it wrong first.

If you are young, save your money for fun stuff like spring break, going out on dates, vaccation, etc.

I think this, no matter what FD you within in 3 years t will cost you at least $20,000. If you buy one for $13,000 and plan to pay it off in 3 years, well trust me it ain't going to go that way. Some people may get lucky, but you can't depend on luck.

Im 21 and make 500 a week or everage a little less. I wanted to buy one already modded but with a bad engine for really cheap and drive it till it crashes. then hopefully by then I can rebuild the engine myself..Thats what I was thingking. But anyways thnx...I will just keep looking until I find a deal I cant refuse.

You sound like you would be a responsible FD owner to me. Here's a strong argument. As expensive and comparatively difficult to maintain as they are, most FD owners wouldn't trade them for anything.

 

JONSKI...Whoa u dont even know...I work on my 2nd gen every day and even fixed some of my friends problems on his 91. I have done everything except drive train and internal engine. I have already saved thousands by doing things myself and doing custom interior exterior mods as well. I even put in my own stereo. So im pretty proud and familiar. Thnx again.

 

No car is worthing dumping every penny you own into, just keep that in mind. Dont' be sitting at home with a cool car while your frinds are in Panama City sucking on big ole ******* and throwing down.

 

What I have learned is the more you tell your parents the more **** you get yourself into
What, are you going to talk to your mom about reliability mods? tell them to shut the fu_k up well not really but just tell them that you are getting this car and then take care of everything yourself and don't complain to them if something breaks.

when I got my first car they didn't want me touching the engine or anything so that the car would be stock and 2 weeks later I had a cold air intake, exhaust, rims, tint, foglishts haha. Any way my point is that it would be very stupid to try to explain to them stuff about the car and how it is reliable if you do this this and this. Don't even try it just tell them it's a normal car and that's what you want and then take care of it yourself especially if you are 21

but what if they know the rx-7 is unreliable, and know that it was discontinued in the US for a reason. what would someone tell their parents then??

I make pretty good money, and I just sold the FD. Now I have money coming out of my ears. Even though my FD was bone stock, it still cost me an arm and a leg. You definately don't want to have a loan on one of these cars.

 

if your parents are helping you get the car, then i guess they kinda have a right to know the deal, or give their input. but like snook said, if not, save yourself A LOT of hassle and just shutup!

i don't get it - if you want the car, why are you asking others permission? if they give it to you without you asking (an opinion), why are you considering so much? because maybe they are right? thats the only reason to consider it.

bottom line, they are good cars. if you read, and read and read some more, you can avoid the mistakes of others. i've had my car for 2 years, put about 30K miles on it, and the most money i've spent on maintenance is tires. other than that, its all been to simple things: plugs, wires, fuel filter, K&N filter cleaner/oiler, oil, oil filters, etc....

one of the best things you can do is get a book and make a maintenace schedule. OH, and the absolute BEST thing you can do is DRIVE, DRIVE , DRIVE the damn thing! if you let the car sit all week, and run the **** out of it on friday night, you'll end up w/ problems. I;m telling you - Drive the car, and don't drive it like a damn minivan - get the RPMs up - don't baby it - you'll kill it.
