I need some buying help

I'm looking to buy my first 7. I have a 67 nova drag car, and had a R33 GTR for 3 years while I was in Japan. I need to get back into performance that I can drive alot. I'm looking at a silver FD on ebay right now and wanted to get everybody's input if it is a good deal or if I could do better.

Lots of goodies in that car

As the title of my post says, there are many goodies in the car.
It looks fairly well kept as well.

There are a few things I don't like:
1) Engine is making 300 whp @ 12.5 psi and has close to 70k miles on it (original engine)
2) I cannot stand cars that are painted of a different colour, but retain some parts of the original paint. (this car was red and repainted). This would urge me to have a very close look at the paint job, sometimes it looks great in pictures, but not so much from close up.
3) I'll get flamed for this, but I also don't like those lights. I don't have a problem with the flush non pop-ups, but these in my opinion don't go with the car's lines as they bump up from the bodywork in a way that doesn't go with this car.
4) The buy it now price in my opinion is pretty steep. I would say that -without knowing who drove it and how- you might have to rebuild not too far down the road, which could run you quite a bit of cash.

Having said that, without knowing what it would sell for, it is difficult to judge whether or not it is a good buy.
You need to keep in mind that an unmolested car (original everything, with some reliability mods), even with those miles, would be a better buy, because it would probably be a car that was not abused, well taken care of, trouble free. And you can work from there, at least you know what you had to begin with.
Certainly, the car has a lot of pricey upgrades that make it an interesting purchase.
Personally, I wouldn't pay more than 12/14k for it, because I would factor in a rebuild.
People around here will tell you otherwise, but I cannot care less for what you spend on a car in upgrades and aftermarket. First off, it is stuff that wears out just like anything else that the car came with; second, very rarely do you find a car that has a lot of money invested in it that was done perfectly and was done the way you would do it up.
I would buy off the forum here, it is very likely that somebody knows the owner, his car, the conditions, and it appears that there is much more choice in terms of colours, mileage, engine trims, and so on.
Hope this helps.

The one thing about eBay and FDs is that they don't go together very well.

I would never buy an FD on eBay except if it's a steal (such that if it arrives as a complete piece of crap, I still made a decent buy) or I could check it out in person prior to bidding.

FDs are hard to shop for and eBay makes it much harder. I'd contact the buyer, make a trip to see it, and make an offer off-line.

It might be a decent car if the coolant seals are in good shape and the compression is good. But at 70k it could also be in poor shape.

SINx - i'll keep you in mind for sure. I'm pretty much open to anything at this point.

gio64 - The 7 on ebay has a clean title - which is a big deal to my bank, so that is a bonus. I do like alot of the mods that are done to that car, but not all of them. I love the wheels and the electronics. I do agree that cars painted a different color tend to turn me off unless they were done completely. That being said, I want to do alot of CF and I do like a 7 in red, so I might repaint it again.

dgees - I would def go check it out before buying it. It's fairly close to where i'm at, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the input guys. I really appreciate it.

Best advice: Don't but the first car you see. Take some time to look at what is available, then make an educated choice.

thanks for the links. There is alot of good info there for anybody who has the FD itch.

I've been looking into FD's since I had to sell by GTR back in July. Honestly, (sorry guys) I would rather have my Skyline back, but i'm sure you know how close to impossile that is. So the RX7 is next on my list. Supras and Evo's are right up there too, but I think the 7 is what i want. I've already got some JDM only body parts for it, so I might as well use them.

Thanks for everything guys. This is a great forum. I was expecting to get flamed at lease once or twice already for asking a stupid question.

Well if GT-R is your bag, try a LS1 RX7.. it might be more for what you are looking for.

However, the rotary has grown on me so much that I actually favor it over the LS1 for the driving experience.

I personally don't like muscle car / japspec swaps. I know the performance is there, but it's just not for me. Also, I already have a 67 Nova, so I already have a Chevy engine. I want to get into something a little different. And i'm sure I can get plenty of power out of a rotary. I'm only really looking for +/- 400 ponies. Much more than that is pretty much useless unless it's a dedicated track car (just my opinion).

The crappy color change always bothers me on the car. It says, "I am just too cheap to have this done correctly" and it that is the case with the paint what else has the owner gone the cheap or half-assed route on?? This car LOOKS like it has been decently taken care of, but the buy it now price is too high. I am with Dave, 7's are difficult to shop for anyway and when you factor in the uncertainties of buying a modified car on ebay, that just doesn't sit well with me personally.

My advise is look around on this site or other car sites and find a better car. There are LOTS of FD's out there for good prices due to the decreased desire for "toy" cars at the moment. One advantage to buying a car from a member that has been on here for a while is you may track his posts/questions/threads about anything with the car and maybe come up with a decent history (or good recent history).

Good luck with your search, you will not be disappointed in your decision with purchasing an RX7.

The car *looks* clean, and has some pretty nice body/interior mods, however that kind of mileage on an original motor demands a certified compression test!!!

On the plus side, if the engine is on it's last leg you should be able to get a lower price, and Pineapple is just up the coast. I believe they are one of (if not the) best rebuild guys in the country, and are reasonably priced.

I would *not* pay 20k for this car... right now it seems all show, less go.

Thanks for the input gents. I think I am going to let the 7 on ebay pass and get something else. Probably off of the forums.
